Really? Bizarre.

It's a really fascinating photo. It was taken at a time when posing for photography still had a 'solemn' culture in the West, like having your portrait painted - especially considering that 'snapshot' photography was still cutting-edge at this time. But this fellow lacked that cultural context - not being, well, from the West - and opted for a stunning smile instead.

It's really fantastic, very humanizing in a way that you rarely see in old photos - due to that solemn posing culture!
