I suppose they have arguments about the protocol being more energy efficient. They will need to convince the dev of Fluffy Chat to port the protocol for me to switch over.

It's generally more hasslefree and much faster, and it is easy to connect xmpp accounts with Lemmy or Piefed and thus be reachable under the same federated address.

If anyone is interested in adding a linked XMPP server to their instance, I am willing to help with advise. Just PM me or contact me on XMPP with the same username as here.

Do admins of XMPP rooms have to update their groups separately from the homeserver?

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not exactly sure what you mean, but if you are referring to Matrix like room versions then that entire concept doesn't exist in XMPP (which prevents a lot of problems).

That sounds nice, so do all the rooms get updated alongside the homeserver?

Well, "yes". But there isn't really such a thing as updating a room. In xmpp, rooms follow a standard and communicate additional optional capabilities to clients.

XMPP not being E2EE exclusive because of it's age is not the greatest but I'm assuming that modern extensions have fixed that.

Most apps enable it by default and display a warning when it is disabled, which is by far preferrable over enforcing it.

My main issue with XMPP at this time is there isn't a client I like. The one I see most recommended is one that looks almost exactly like element IMO. I would want something that looks similar to Mattermost/Cinny/Slack, but as far as I can tell it does not exist. I'd love to use XMPP, but the projects I follow are mostly on Matrix (and discord :/) and there isn't an appealing client for me, so I really can't justify using it.

Which XMPP client looks like Element?

I think https://prose.org/ is quite Slack like, but it is still missing some features since it is quite new.

Gajim

Prose looks really cool, I'm going to have to try it out. It never came up when I was looking a few weeks back :P

I find that it looks more like Discord, but sure, Element also copied a lot of stuff from Discord.

Discord Screenshot of Discord

I honestly feel like if you swapped the Gajim and the Element screenshot I wouldn't even notice. Discord's layout is a bit different even if not by enough that some people wouldn't realize it

Switch Gajim to dark mode and close that thread view in Discord and it looks almost the same.

But yes there is a lot of UI copying, but Discord is clearly the main inspiration for both.

Thanks for the screenshots!

I tried adding an avatar using Monal but it didn’t work 😭
