this could only be stupider if they said AI would be used to deploy the drones

[–] Kennystillalive@feddit.org 1 points 3 hours ago

Lol wasn't that like a I did a thing video?

[–] Nikls94@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

LOL they’re using the DJI Video system on those drones. The antennas are DJI.

And that is the absolute worst thing they could have used. DJIs wall penetration sucks ass and since schools are typically built sturdier than regular houses, they’ll have 2 rooms of nice image that turn into a blocky Minecraft mess right after. They should have gone with a high power analog system since that would give the best wall penetration.

Also, they only recently allowed BVLOS flights in the USA - might be for these things only.

To add to that: those drones can be hacked, but only if you press the WiFi button on the drone itself, since it deactivates that when powered on normally; or if you connect it via USB. Also, if they control it via remote - the DJI remote is worse than ELRS. A 868 ELRS module would be better penetration wise but worse for latency. You can’t hack ELRS remotely, since they are secured via passphrase. If your passphrase is "I don’t like where this is going", you need to install that on the drone and the controller. Any drone with that phrase can be controlled with any controller using that phrase.

Also, the drone in the picture is likely a 3“ cinewhoop. Those are made for lift, not for speed. But even then, the maximum weight of one of those would be 1200 grams. Looking at the pictures, 600 grams could be the battery and about 200 the drone, that leaves 400 grams for deadly things.

these drones are gonna end up killing unarmed kids.

[–] Karjalan@lemmy.world 9 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

The US government loooves to kill unarmed kids

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 4 points 5 hours ago

Right? We're gonna use drones to kill unarmed kids, without the expense of having to ship stuff to a different country. It's like a 60% off coupon for your favorite hobby, Uncle Sam is creaming himself in anticipation.

[–] quitethekiwi@lemmy.nz 3 points 9 hours ago

I was always terrified of Robocop when I was a kid. What a strange world we live in..

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

the drones were equipped with pepper rounds plus a glass breaker

That's still terrible to be at a school but I bet it would be a hell of a lot of fun to play around with. Like aerial battle bots.

[–] INHALE_VEGETABLES@aussie.zone 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

How is there not a drone version of battle bots yet

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

Aerial combat vehicles don't take hit that well.

[–] YogaDouchebag@lemmy.world 16 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It’s funny how much they do just to circumvent gun control.

[–] choochooMF@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, let's push for gun control as the fascists are taking over! Wonderful idea!

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

Some of these jackasses are so brainwashed they're still worried about the thing the masters told them to worry about for decades.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 34 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

Fucking hilarious quote here:

"It's a bit like that movie The Matrix, where the agent can jump into the nearest person and immediately be good to go. We're a little bit like that—but we're the good guys," he added.

Oh yeah so it's kinda like the terrifying dystopian surveillance nightmare where people are oppressed at all times by an omnipresent, invincible, untouchable outer force that compels them to unquestionably follow the path laid out for them in life by their masters. But like, in a good way!

[–] Nalivai@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

What actually happens to people who's body is taken by the agent in the matrix? They can't be not dead, right? This makes it even better.

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 20 points 20 hours ago

Next headline reads "armed drones were hacked and lead to worst systematic school shooting in history"

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 11 points 19 hours ago

Yay! Bullied tech nerds no longer have to bring their own gun! That's convenient for them.

[–] FuckFascism@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

Hacks drone, oops. Let's stick with metal detectors and guards

[–] hayvan@feddit.nl 10 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Someone will absolutely take this as a challenge.

[–] Nalivai@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

I bet my ass those drones will have more backdors and vulnerabilities than a public square camera. This shit will be hacked by a kid with kali linux and a hoodie in no time.

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 18 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

You know how most school shootings can be stopped in the US? Safe storage laws. Most of the time the shooter is an underage kid who got access to their parents' guns and went to shoot up the school. Obviously it wouldn't stop shit like Uvalde and Sandy Hook. But it would still stop a fuckload of smaller shootings we don't hear about because they are background noise at this point.

[–] Auth@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Safe storage laws, licenses and responsibility for anything that happens with your gun. No public carry laws. Removal of gun owning rights for people that commit violent or drug related crime. These are like the bare minimum needed to have a society with guns.

Police vists for people acting unhinged online and check they dont have any illegal weapons. Different classes of licenses with increased scruity.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 11 points 22 hours ago

Next mass shooting headline: Bullied nerd hacks armed drones in school to extract bloody revenge.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

How would you enforce such a law? Sounds like all they would do would be to allow you to prosecute people after the fact.

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 4 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Yes, and when people realize it is being enforced they will do it more.

Also add the cavet that if a gun is stolen and misused by a member of the household, they would be liable for whatever actions were taken. This putting them on the hook for the shooting, too.

So will these drones be paid for by a gun sales tax or will they just cut more social services?

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I feel like someone is going to hack one of these and then do a school shooting

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 10 points 23 hours ago

You bet your ass. You think with Big Balls storing millions of people's data on unsecure servers and Las Vegas being slammed with a hack that would make Hollywood claim is unrealistic means there will be script kiddies ready with pre-made hacks that would make them kill people. This is cyberpunk 2077 level shit.

[–] AmieFromEarth@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

I get more and more grateful to be born in Europe. The US is a real life satire fever dream at this point.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 33 points 1 day ago

Too many guns leads to weekly school shootings.

US: We need more guns!

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 6 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

it's like the Onion. it's really like the Onion. some of these you go, "hah ! could be the onion !" but this one, it really ought to be the Onion

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 day ago (8 children)

With more than 60 school shooting incidents reported in Florida alone since 2018, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database, educators and lawmakers have urgently sought innovative approaches to school safety.

No. No you haven't because every mindless idiot can fix this problem within a minute, had they have the interest to do so

BAN GUNS!

Aaaaaand problem solved.

As always, the American answer is more guns!

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 1 day ago

anything but do something about the guns. SMH

[–] itisileclerk@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago

It is funny how americans think that more guns will prevent gun violence. Then again, they think that more pills will prevent drug problem.

[–] mhague@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago

Honestly there are aspects about this that I like. In the vein of bomb defusal robots being obviously good. But with, you know, current politics and our chronic issues, it just feels sinister.
