My biggest complaints are all UI based. I wish the UI felt a bit less crowded, and there was a setting that would instead load up pages that don't auto-update.

I read the Lemmy Documentation before signing up for a server and that has helped me to understand what is going on here. I would say that my experience has been generally positive. I really like this platform.
Overall it looks promising. Upgrading however from 0.17.y to 0.18.0 went unsuccessful for me. Ended up simply starting over from scratch. Thankfully the instance did not have any noticeable content anyways yet so the only thing lost were two days of headache. I am looking forward to get it more reliable since potential is certainly there.
Cheers
Why could you not keep the instance going from 0.17.x to 0.18.x?
It's worked fine here and now I'm on 0.18.1-rc4 and rc.7 for UI. All gone seamlessly
I assume there was some random regression introduced with 0.18.0 which has been fixed in one of the newer 0.18.1-rc pre-releases but not sure.
It's taking me a bit to grasp the practical use of the "federated" thing.
It seems like there aren't a lot of tutorial-type instructions on the web of how to use it. Like a YouTube video.
I would be nice if a good number of redditors would join for activity to flourish.
Be the change you want to see! This is an open source project, not a for-profit company, so that kind of thing is down to us.
If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer. I may be new to Lemmy (5 days old user), but I've been following the fediverse for a while, and I get a lot of what's happening here at a UI & technical level.
In terms of making a youtube video, I've never made one before, maybe somebody reading this can make a decent video covering the basics?
Edit: Thought I might as well answer the first part, practical use of "federated" thing. Spez is an asshole, right? Well, what if you could just block Spez's server and just keep on chugging, and lose absolutely nothing? Maybe you're on Spez's server. Easy, just move to a different Spez-free server and everything just works exactly the same. The federation gives protection against bad-actor admins.
The logical next question is ok, we can protect against greedy power-hungry assholes, but what about bad actors? What if a new instance starts, let's call it nazi.st, and they are arguing with everybody and start fights? Simple. If everybody on an instance is being assholes, egged on by asshole admins, then your instance can just block them. Famously, Truth Social is just another Mastodon instance. They've been blocked by every single other Mastodon server and now they're just shouting at themselves.
I like it so far but my issue is that since Reddit had SUCH a huge community. Even niche subreddits were semi active. Here I think it'll take a while before we hit similar levels (or never at all)
Like others have said I'm going to miss the niche subreddits and the thousand different cat subs lol
Yeah, same. But that's why we're gravitated here. To grow those gardens back.
I'd like an optimization for Jerboa as well as more customization for our accounts. Jerboa is fine as it is functional, but sometimes text boxes just extend all the way to the edge of the screen and makes it not visually appealing. I'm still learning though as I'm currently figuring out how to visit the communities in the other servers.
As for communities, I just hope that a mass migration of even 10% of Reddit's disappointed users would help boost the growth of Lemmy communities and help make niche communities thrive. I personally am a subscriber to the writing and anime subreddits, so I hope there'll be similar communities here.
First comment :) Researching about self-hosting a personal instance now...
You're not the first, you just don't get the full list of comments until you subscribe from your home instance... and I'm unsure if you get earlier comments than when you did that. It's a bit of a pain point
You don't need to just search, you need to have at least one member subscribed
So it's more or less the same as mastodon... I had to move to another, bigger, instance to be able to see news and follow hashtags without a relay
Well your horribly wrote โurโ has lowered my experience somewhat
