Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Futurama sucks (external-content.duckduckgo.com)

(I moved this post over from !mildlyinfuriating@lemmy.world because it fits better here)

I'm currently watching Futurama for the first time because i always kinda thought it was cool when i was younger.

I recognize now how much it sucks.

The major thing that annoys me is that it displays the world in the year 3000 as if people would still have to hold down a job to earn enough money to live. The idea of full-employment sickens me. In my mind, i exclusively do tedious things in the hope that some day, they won't ever have to be done again. Like software development. Linux only has to be written once. Once functional, it basically lasts forever, or at least close to (only minor modifications need to be made, like adaptations to a new protocol or sth).

The very idea that people will still have to work in the year 3000 is very repulsive. It shows that society hasn't matured enough yet. I hope this is not the future that we actually end up with.

Futurama is not a documentary or a prediction of the future. It is a satire of us now through the veil of the golden age of science fiction.

Get it together

It's fascinating to see an opinion on Futurama as a show based on the idea that it conveys any kind of aspirational future.

So this is a comedy show. Heavy with satire. I don't think that the writers had all of humanities aspirations for the future in the year 3000 in mind, so much as making a funny show. The future probably won't have robots that smoke cigars and drink liquor either, in case there was any confusion about that.

It won’t?!?!

I understand disliking something because of what it stands for, but this is an odd take.

Most scifi uses the technology to help coax consumers (of the media) into a more receptive state to talk about real world issues. For example Futuramas first episode does this by showing how all the crazy things we think about the future (aka how Fry sees the future) become the mundane for those that live in that time period. Yet at the same time, through Fry's enthusiasm we can recognize that there are amazing things all around us already.

Now many futuristic shows want to show you the possibilities of what could be and raise the question about what that would mean for the world/society. Futurama though is more focused on using the antics of the future to highlight the everyday issues we face today (while also having some more slice of life elements).

If you want scifi that tries to show what the potential future could be, then something like Startrek might be a better fit. However, even in that show there are still people who have to work to make a living.

Come on people, you're supposed to vote it UP if it's an unpopular opinion! Even if it's based on misunderstanding, at least this one's still an opinion.

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

No things like this need to be obliterated from this platform.

It's the equivalent of "chocolate sucks because I hate chocolate".

Honestly opinions like this should just be kept to oneself.

[–] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Aren't all opinions tautological by their very nature of being opinions?

Also, this IS NOT like "I don't like chocolate because it's chocolate". It'd be like, "I don't like chocolate because the idea of harvesting some weird bean in specific regions of the planet is foreign to me." They have reasoning. Just because it's ill formed based on personal shortcomings doesn't make it devoid of reasoning.

In any case, this is a place for unpopular opinions. The opinion stated is unpopular. The rules say that should be up voted. Full stop.

Hahahahahahababababa omg you're funny. Thanks for the laugh.

Now, go back to school and read some history. Your lack of understanding of the human conditions is... Laughable.

Then maybe you'll appreciate the humor in Futurama.

Granted, Futurama isn't everyone's cup of tea, nothing is. I enjoy it for an episode or two at a time, but there are far outright funnier shows.
