I just watched Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips
cos I saw the final scene on insta (spoilers obvs). Fucking loved it, absolutely gripped throughout and Tom SMASHES it.

Assault on Precinct 13, the 1976 version. I'm slowly working my way through all of John Carpenter's stuff. Very slowly.

The ice cream truck scene was a shock, even knowing about it in advance. It must have hit so hard 50 years ago.

My SO had never seen the 2003 Freaky Friday so we watched it this week. It held up really well! I never knew that there were so many versions or that it was based on a book.

Our family did the KPop Demon Hunters sing along last weekend, and it was fun. We’d already seen the movie at least once each. The Honest Trailer video kinda nails it: “Frozen” energy with a hint of Spiderverse style and some memorable songs. Netflix must be absolutely salivating at the franchise potential too.

Then, I just finished Superman. It was nice. Gunn’s sensibilities worked well, and I kind of like the new DC setup where we can hopefully be spared a million origin stories.

Oh wow! It isn’t the origin story? That is the best thing I have ever heard about that movie. I doubt I will ever see it but it is good news hear that they are at least removing that redundancy.

I don’t think this is much of a spoiler, as it’s stated within the first couple of minutes of the movie, but…

Tap for spoilerSuperpowered people have been around at least 300 years and Superman specifically has been doing superhero stuff for three years.

Just got a newborn so lots of movie watching when not looking after the little sack of meat or trying to sleep.

Barbie Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone Rush Hour Ghostbusters Back in Action Nonna's Nimona

The list goes on but those are the ones that come to mind. I need something new to watch to help get me through this newborn period..

I finally watched 'Barbie' (2023) last night. I guess I'm not the target audience, but I really don't understand what all the fuss was about. It's quite a generic and bland film, with very few interesting or developed characters and the plot is all over the place and quite difficult to follow. Despite attempting to satirise large corporations, the film lives constantly in the shadow of them and struggles to not feel like one giant marketing campaign.

Really the only interesting thing about it is the feminist message, which is delivered in such a preachy and crude fashion that it becomes annoying very quickly. It's also predominantly second wave feminism, so it feels outdated and very much through the lens of white, middle-and-upper class women. It seems like maybe the point here was to critique this type of feminism, but the film doesn't do it with any depth or spend anywhere near enough time on it so the main theme just defaults to "yay woman CEOs and presidents". The most interesting character is Ken, but unfortunately he and his story arc never feel like anything more than a plot device for Barbie and feminism, which is very ironic considering this is the exact opposite of where the storyline leads

I'm not sure what the actual target was, but the actual audience broke down like this (source):

the audience was 66.2 percent female and significantly younger, with 74.6 percent under the age of 29. In stark contrast, the film’s blockbuster counterpart that premiered on the same day, “Oppenheimer,” had an audience that was 70.7 percent male and 52.9 percent over 30 years old.

My favorite part was near the end when certain things had to be explained to each person, so we hear it again and again. It made me chuckle because it felt so true to life. Ugh, hafta explain to the next person, too....

We watched Kpop Demon Hunters, which was ok. It suffers from the same problems as Turning Red in that it doesn't seem to know what to do with its messaging other than "parental pressures and generational trauma bad". Action sequences were good but not spectacular, music was fine but not great.

All in all a reasonably entertaining movie that slightly disappointed us with all of the good things we'd heard about it.
