This would be a massive reversal from Trump's policies so far, which have threatened international students' ability to enter the country and jeopardized the admissions of many top institutions — and it also contradicts his prior moves to revoke visas for Chinese students. But the new pledge, which was backed up by Trump's Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, provoked instant fury from the MAGA world.

"If we are only mass deporting 1,000 illegals each day but allowing 600,000 Chinese spies to come to our country, how can we call them mass deportations?" wrote far-right influencer Laura Loomer, a frequent influence on the Trump administration's hiring decisions. "Do the math. We will never get rid of the millions who came in under Biden. It's basic math."

You know it's bad when Laura Loomer is making a valid point.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 47 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The math is the only valid point in that quote, the rest is racist garbage.

[–] Emma_Gold_Man@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Even the math isn't valid unless you can show that all 600,000 of those students will remain in the US illegally when their visas expire. Not a single one of them going back to China, taking their degree to another english speaking country, or obtaining a work visa in the US - that's not realistic.

The real number was estimated at 3.67% in 2023, so 22,020 new undocumented immigrants per year from this versus 365,000 planned deportations. Not even the math checks out.

Came in under Biden?

Biden beat trump on deportations. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c36e41dx425o

Obama beat the previous administration on deportations.

I’m not really saying this is great, but the one thing the republicans should be happy the democrats did they still tell lies about it.

That's nice. RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES.

Did he suddenly get reminded of exactly how much money they pay to go to school here?

[–] tburkhol@lemmy.world 28 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

And the students have to go back when they finish. They come here, for a little while, learn how to be inventors, programmers, and scientists, then go back to one of the fastest growing economies on the planet. Meanwhile, we are firing all of the domestic scientists and telling our domestic students that we need them to harvest crops.

What could go wrong?

[–] yucandu@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

then go back to one of the fastest growing economies on the planet.

India?

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org -1 points 3 weeks ago

Many stay, there is 1 year visa for them to get job which can be concerted into h1b which happens a lot.

[–] ronigami@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Who’s going to pay that kind of money to have a 50% chance of being deported before you’re finished with the degree?

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

He probably figured out a way where each parent has to bribe him personally.

They're already out, Trump's already been incriminated. What are more files going to do?

There is a real opportunity to drive wedges between Trump and his base on many issues right now.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 14 points 3 weeks ago

That might be why there is so much trolling in this community today, there are a lot of wedges.

  • New epstein victims drop next week
  • Guiffrie's tell all book comes out soon
  • They're not hurting the "right people," meaning foreigners are taking their college spots.
  • A shit ton of his base is losing money because he's rounding up their slave wage staff
  • They're losing their social security and medicaid
  • Student loans are kicking in again.
[–] hanrahan@piefed.social 13 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Don't see how, they're literally ok with him fucking their kids.

Brad, is in fact, not ok

That's lunacy. I wonder if his answer would change if it was Biden or Obama...

That said, I do agree w/ forgiving someone who does something terrible to your family. But forgiveness doesn't mean you try to remove all consequences, it just means you move on from hating the person to focusing on recovery. That individual should absolutely face consequences for their actions, and it should certainly call into question whatever you thought you knew about them.

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

Very optimistic. I hope you are right. They are the most gullible people among us so I'm sure their brain rot will just be manipulated into accepting it.

Between squeezing rare earth metals trade and dumping US bonds, China’s got him by the balls. And he knows it.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

No, no, no, this is the art of the deal. You make the worst deals possible, but only talk about a small percentage of it and get the media to back you up. Then, only a small percentage of the US even know how shitty his deals are.

Well shit, he's only screwing us over, so it is kind of a good deal for him. He's only got about 10 years lift at most anyway, what does he care?

This *evolved into a self-owned, depressing comment.

I'm GLAD we're Deporting my Brown Neighbor so we can IMPORT CHYNESE PEOPLE!

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

To be fair, I could totally see them accepting their tuition money then deporting them once they arrive.

That would be a very Trump thing to do.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Except you don't pay all at once. When would they deport them? One semester, two, or one semester before graduation? Also good luck collecting on any loans they took out if you deport them before they get their degree.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

I don’t think they’ll think about it.

One hand will collect the semester’s tuition, the other will have ICE randomly deport them.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

Was this so the tariffs didn't look so bad? He is the worst deal maker ever.

[–] kepix@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago
