I usually don’t try using coupons since many of the codes shown on websites don’t work, but I feel bad for not trying hard or smart enough. I’ve heard good things about Retailmenot, I haven’t tried it yet but I wondering if there are privacy trade-offs.

I use a private browser and grab the coupon code. If it's a click through link, I don't.

Good approach, but these sites still track you through cookies and fingerprinting even in private browsing - I use Honey Alternatives like Keepa or CamelCamelCamel that have better privacy polices and dont sell your purchase history to data brokers.
