But, why is tourism down?!

[–] threeonefour@piefed.ca 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

News stories like this arent helping US tourism, but this lady isn't a tourist. She lives and works in the US, has a US work visa, and an "I-360" visa. Her work visa was renewed but her other visa was still on hold for some reason. She left the US to visit Canada and was stopped on the way back into the US because her I-360 visa wasn't valid. Ironically, she works at a maximum security prison.

She basically has 2 visas, with one being valid and one in the "processing" phases of renewal, and they still arrested her and her 6 year old son, who had a valid visa, and held them for nearly a month until it hit international news.

They threw her and her child into a Texas prison, yes prison, over a minor issue with paperwork on a secondary visa while coming home to Washington from Canada. That is not justifiable.

Big Polizei: Tourism? But you said... Oh, fuck: you were saying terrorism, not tourism! Sorry. Of course, we will release all those tourists right away!

It's amazing what a story hitting the news can do. This is why a free press is so important.

Tbh, I know it gives the fascists the belief they won, yes, but at this stage and with a family: I would at this stage simply consider ditching the US and move back home if I would be living in the US and be a foreigner from an economically well off country. Of course it's not easy. It's fucking hard. (Been there, done that) But unlike the poor souls that come from countries that are outright dangerous, have no social system to speak of or provide little economic opportunities she comes from a relatively wealthy country with social security.

Better living off social security in NZ than, well, being disappeared by the ICE in the US.
