Windows 11 has given me no issues whatsoever. I'm not apologizing for having a great experience.

Use whatever makes you happy and matches your needs. Ignore the haters.

I use arch btw. And Ubuntu. And Windows. And an iPhone. Does it matter?

[–] Little8Lost@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

For your needs: yes, it matters

Then you obviously know nothing about Mormons.

The church covers up sexual abuse on a routine basis.

Mormonism is inherently homophobic, transphobic, racist, misogynistic, and emotionally abusive.

I get that you're probably just focusing on the aspect of their proselytizing but their end goal is nefarious and oppressive.

To be fair, that's true of basically every Abrahamic religion these days. Religion itself is the placebo for the lazy/weak.

I thought this was the shitpost community

I don't use arch btw

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (6 children)

Arch promoters are the worst. I believe anyone suggesting Arch to convert people are Windows/Mac marketing. If you already use Linux, then Arch could be useful for you. But anyone even remotely new or experienced but more interested in using their computer rather than configuring an OS shouldn't get an Arch recommendation.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 15 points 2 days ago

I don't really ever see anyone promote Arch. People have this hard on for hating on Arch users that's based on decade-old preconceptions, and they somehow perpetrate them without substance.

If you don't want to recompile your kernel every day, you may as well buy a Mac.

I use Mint, by the way.

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana@piefed.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I use debian btw

It's fine and not exciting in any way

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

What I like most about Mint is that it doesn't get in the way.

[–] naticus@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

I'm actually the opposite on this because I agree. I use Arch (btw) but I'm also aware this is not the OS for the uninitiated. Arch users who suggest it for the jumping off point from Windows are: a) dicks, and b) delusional in thinking this is a reasonable UX, and c) they are actually giving Arch a bad name by suggesting it inappropriately.

I use Arch (still, btw) because I want the bleeding edge on many things, I actually prefer the shell for most admin tasks, and it lets me fully customize my install, not installing any bloat I don't want. But I'm also very comfortable with Linux and have used various other distros before this one for decades.

When a friend asks me which Linux flavor, I try to take into account their use case. Gaming only? Bazzite, SteamOS, or maybe Mint. Productivity? Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Mint. Power user ready for Arch? They probably already know and I don't need to tell them.

[–] ChuckTheMonkey@fedia.io 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Steam OS which is based on Arch doesn't need much first time configuration. It's the greatest invention since bread slicer

It's great and so is Bazzite!

It is more of a shit post than a shit post.

I do use arch BTW

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No way, if you feel that strongly you should definitely stay on windows.

If anybody else would like to switch we'll help them but you certainly don't have to. Honestly when people are that much against switching switching really goes well.

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

"Just install linux"

"When will people just install linux?!"

Etc. The constant propaganda gets tiring lol. I plan to switch in around two months, but constant yapping on lemmy almost made me consider IoT windows xD

Yeah because Windows turned you all into tech-iliterate people and Linux is a good start into learning how to properly use a computer. Recently a Coworker approached me because she needed to move every photo from one folder to another and she has been dragging and dropping them all day but its just to many. While technically some Windows people know its possible with Windows cmd in a one-liner, most if not all Linux users will know the command in a heartbeat.

There is exactly one OS that improves the skills of its users just by using it.

Maybe if Windows and Mac users wont act like a bug stuck on its back once they encounter the slightest hint of a problem and start bothering the Linux guy with it, the Linux guy would be less condescending on their OS choice.

[–] CubitOom 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Agreed, however I think in most cases it's more than just tech illiteracy, I think it's actual illiteracy, or atleast an aversion to reading.

From my exexperience, the way the average windows user reacts to an unexpected error message is with rage and frustration while also not attempting to understand the message. Although it can be hard since windows error messages are usually terrible. I think microsoft knows this and that's why newer windows errors look like this:

The average Linux user will read the error and research it to resolve it themselves. But it's a lot easier when the error message is actually meaningful and the community documents issues and answers questions honestly. Although again, it all hinges on the ability to read.

100% people have gotten so dumb. They dont even know what a file explorer is.

My problem with Linux, that is getting better, is that it has largely catered to power users. Simply put most users either aren’t, or don’t care to be, tech savvy. And that is fine actually, because that means they have other things they are interested in and care more for.

Things like SteamOS are catering more towards casual users with a bunch of built in compatibility features that means games work like they do on windows. Making it easier for casual users to make the jump. Now rather than having to know you need 57 compatibility layers (This is exaggeration for effect, yes I have to point this out because I have had some people get pissy at me for doing this) to get things to work like they should they are all neatly bundled together and you have Valve’s promise that they will work here.

Because of the SteamDeck many people were introduced into the world of Linux. Without many of them even realizing that they were using it at first. Add on the fact that it just works for the games people actually want to play and you have a good shot at tackling Windows.

I’m sorry to power users but you just don’t decide what the market cares about really. It’s the casual users, there is just so many more of them that they get to decide what operating systems are supported.

It’s superior in every way except for the programs you actually use don’t work on it!

[–] Pika@rekabu.ru 3 points 2 days ago

At this point, it's not a race to get people to Linux, but rather a race to get people off Windows and MacOS, which is almost the same thing practically.

We really don't want them to have it their way, as it's detrimental to digital freedom.
