President Donald Trump stood in the White House press briefing room Monday morning, declaring it “Liberation Day in D.C.” and announcing that he was taking over Washington, D.C.’s police force. Invoking Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, a rarely used provision of federal law, Trump said he was placing the Metropolitan Police Department under direct White House control and deploying the D.C. National Guard into city streets.

Do none of these people have any backbones?

[–] jouhija@sopuli.xyz 2 points 52 minutes ago

Ironic to see a post like this in a "liberal gun owners" community, yet I haven't heard ANYTHING about Americans standing up to ICE or other fascists by using their guns. It's as if Americans were cowards and willing to lay down in front of literal nazis

Release the Trump/Epstein files

[–] itisileclerk@lemmy.world 8 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

ELI5, (not American here), republicans want less federal control or total federal control?

[–] kuhli@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Republicans claim to want less federal control but support trump asserting total federal control

Really they just want to tell others what to do but don't like when they get told what to do

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 4 points 7 hours ago

Yes, is the answer. They want to eat the cake and to still have it. By selectively enforcing or ignoring law, they get to exert more control over the agenda.

So many people are taking this as a joke. It's parallels to 1930s Germany is so scary. I always used to think that the German people only became Nazis because they feared for their own lives. Now I'm starting to think from the way I see people reacting online that most people are born Nazis and I was the one who misjudged everything. Until the day I die I will never understand people's hatred against one another. We are all born naked, and we will all die alone. Most of us have around 60 years in between and some people choose to fill their days by making it worse for others. We will wipe out our own race through fear and ignorance.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 92 points 20 hours ago

This is absolutely part of an overall plan to normalize military occupation of US cities and a continuation of what was started in LA by equating protest with rebellion.

This will continue to escalate.

[–] A_norny_mousse@fedia.io 73 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Trust me, we are not taking this as a joke. And the comparison to 1930s Germany is not hyperbole. Many have seen it since January; by now everybody should.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 53 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Many of us have seen it since long before January 2025. We were told we were overreacting.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 13 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I expected it to be bad. I expected it to be worse than first term.

I didn't expect it to be this bad.

[–] azertyfun@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 hours ago

Then, and I'm being deadly serious here, you should do a complete review of where you get your news from. This was all in the open long before the election, as part of the project 2025 leaks. "News" media refusing to cover it isn't media worth listening to.

Are we allowed to advocate for violence yet on lemmy.world? or are we still pretending we can reason with nazis? asking for a friend.

[–] KurtVonnegut@mander.xyz 3 points 16 hours ago

Violence is allowed when it is in self-defence.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Not unless you have a train ticket to DC already.

[–] jatone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

there are targets closer to home =)

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Then you've already taken too long. Are you waiting for a personal invitation?

[–] jatone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 13 hours ago

As we say in the bizz timing is everything.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 0 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

If you meant it you wouldn't post it.

[–] jatone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 13 hours ago

Someones got to do the leg work for advocating for it. 😘

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 20 hours ago

I think people just straight up do not understand just how bad this is.

[–] Fuckfuckmyfuckingass@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago

Apathy and cowardness. A winning combination.

[–] glibg@lemmy.ca 3 points 19 hours ago

Well said Eddie Hitler.

[–] PhAzE@lemmy.ca 14 points 14 hours ago

So when is the uprising going to start?

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 58 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

I mean yes this is very scary and concerning but also…

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 29 points 15 hours ago

Yeah, but this is actually more disqualifying than the Epstein files. This isn't a distraction; this is the main event.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 18 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Also, republicans can fire him at any time. This is a job that the American people allegedly hired him to do. He's doing a super shitty job by any measure. Fire his ass.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 6 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

We need Congress to step up and be a full branch of government.

My hope is that a number of Republicans have been biding their time until they can coordinate and actually be effective. Until then, whatever, kiss the ring to not out yourself. But prepare to defend America.

[–] ZMoney@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

The senate is lost to corporate interests. The corporate interest is currently (as it was with Mussolini) with authoritarian rule. There is more hope in the house but the same factors are at play. The military is also extremely powerful. You're going to have to seize power at the point of production.

[–] A_norny_mousse@fedia.io 52 points 20 hours ago

Glad to see they aren't sanewashing:

freewheeling press event ... false assertions

The speech veered from incorrect crime statistics to political grievances. He tied the takeover to cultural issues, railing against “sanctuary cities” and saying, “That’s why they want men playing in women’s sports. That’s why they want transgender for everybody. Everybody transgender.”

This is just another step towards tyranny and hopefully towards collapse. People who say it's not such a big thing and we "libs" are overreacting as usual, forgot that they said that about 100 other things, too.

Incidentally he's kinda making sure he "wins" the next election.

I just hope the country breaks down before that. Sorry, US Americans.

[–] EntropyFlux@lemmy.world 54 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Concerning and fascist.

Also another distraction from the EPSTEIN FILES.

[–] A_norny_mousse@fedia.io 30 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not so sure. Could be the other way round - every step you take towards dismantling democracy, you kinda want people looking the other way.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 8 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, but this time confirming Trump is a sadistic rapist will change peoples minds about him!

[–] bufalo1973@europe.pub 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I'm never sure, why do you ask?

[–] nexguy@lemmy.world 43 points 21 hours ago

A child rapist is in carge of the DC police?

[–] shyguyblue@lemmy.world 39 points 21 hours ago

Are they handing out the Epstein files?

[–] Chee_Koala@lemmy.world 20 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

Satire:

All hail trump, narcissist and senile fascist leader of the immigrant yet somehow pure blood Americans! He has graced us all with another glorious decision! There is really no other way to get rid of the homeless infestation (except ofc providing a minimum safety net and having a semblance of empathy). He just has the balls to do what other, democratic, leaders don't dare (like full dictatorship).

Real talk:

Good luck out there.

[–] A_norny_mousse@fedia.io 13 points 20 hours ago

Sure, the homelessness situation in the USA is dire, but there is only one reason to single out Washington DC, and it surely isn't homeless people.

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 17 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Solve homelessness crisis, dear president

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

He’s going to use prison camps and eugenics to “solve” the homeless crisis. As he destroys the economy and creates a homeless crisis surpassing the Great Depression

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 3 points 7 hours ago

As he destroys the economy

He doesn't. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. Economy works as intended

[–] Damionsipher@lemmy.world 20 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Are people still homeless in forced labour camps?

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 23 points 20 hours ago

GOP: "Trick question, we obviously don't consider them to be people."

[–] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world 7 points 20 hours ago (4 children)

I foresee similar outcomes to LA happening. A weak show of force that will amount to nothing.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago

Don't frame it like it won't turn out to be a big deal. That's a bad idea, intentional or not. Deploying military assets against American citizens should be considered a serious escalation every single time it happens.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

This is different than LA. DC is not a city in a blue state. LA happened before Trump declared homelessness illegal.

We are days away from sending homeless people to concentration camps.

[–] sobchak@programming.dev 6 points 19 hours ago

This is part of their plan to put DC under federal control. Different objective, at least for now. He has taken direct control of DC's police force in this case. He mentioned "sanctuary cities" in his speech, so it wouldn't surprise me if he also takes over LA and other cities in the future.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 7 points 20 hours ago

LA was a test run.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 3 points 20 hours ago

Le it is le happening.
