I'm curious if I can post reddit-hosted content here without a redirect to the site.

As far as I can tell this causes the Lemmy backend to download a copy and serve it from the slrpnk.net server.

Edit: hmm... odd. So it does cache the images for local users and visitors, but not for remote federated viewers. See: https://lemmy.world/post/963188 vs. https://slrpnk.net/post/617339

Ok I think I understand what happens. Not ideal as this will cause problems with federation if the remote image link is not working well.

That sounds like an issue. Any recommendations how to address it?

I think this works! It appears that if I copy an image URL on reddit I can crosspost stuff here without needing to direct anyone to the actual site. That will likely make it a lot easier to repost content here while building up traffic. Does anyone know if Lemmy still has to host a copy of the image? Or is it just calling it up from Reddit's servers? That would be ideal, if it puts traffic on Reddit and not slrpnk.net.

Images wouldn't load for me. Also asks me to get Reddit app.

hmm, you are viewing this from Lemmy.world right? So there might be an CORS issue or an incompatibility between 0.18.0 and 0.18.1-rc 🤔

Edit: this happens when you click on the image, or the link?
