Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

Oh, please, tell me, ServeTheBeam, how exactly does one suck a fuck?

[–] if_only@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

Dear God the internet has come a long way. In my day the best we could do was watch videos of porn stars sucking the dicks of other porn stars!

Remember when we were told not to give out personal details to websites?

[–] WatDabney@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And specifically because if you shared those details, you ran a risk that they were going to fall into the hands of bad actors who would cause you harm.

Which is the exact same risk that still exists today, with only the difference that more often all the time the bad actors are governments and corporations.

Total control over every piece of bread at any cost!!!

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yea, I can remember when the advice was to create a "handle" and never use your real details.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Seems like it was yesterday.

Wait… it WAS yesterday!

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh yes, yesterday, that was when my troubles seemed so far away.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

I believe in yesterday.

Clause - 549: we have every right to know who you are and if you have ever provided your ID on any website or browser, then we have every right to use your ID at our discretion and if you violate the rules or insulted the authorities we can send you a penalty by email.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 36 points 4 days ago (1 children)

No it doesnt. Governments want to so you can't say whatever you want. So you dont get up with a bunch of other citizens and start asking questions or having thoughts of your own.

The nobleman seems to think: "Who do these peasants think they are? Are they trying to talk openly behind my back? What bastards! I will make it so that without an inspection you won't be able to buy a piece of bread!!!"

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well, Google’s attempt to take away our cookies failed….

[–] SugarCatDestroyer@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Well, we'll have to brace ourselves for impact, because next time they can hit a holy place in a way that words can't describe.

[–] SugarCatDestroyer@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

It brings back memories, as if I had read about it somewhere in some dystopian book. Big brother is wathing you.

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I've been wondering how long I'll be able to avoid this.

I pirate whatever I can and not really on main stream social.

[–] SugarCatDestroyer@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Well, I think we have about a year or several years in reserve, then we will have to go offline to avoid penalties for insulting the authorities.

I've noticed it's become increasingly harder to even watch Youtube w/o signing in to give me a "better experience" when I'm using a VPN. LOL, I don't WANT to fucking log in just to watch a video, guys, but of course Google knows that...

For now, it seems to work by using Invidious while on Firefox + VPN. But this seems extremely fragile and prone to breakage.

Thing is, now is not the time (not that it ever was) to let gigantic megacorps scoop up all your data so that if it becomes completely evil after a takeover from someone with a political agenda (imagine another fElon taking over Google's data, for example) they can target you for whatever made-up bullshit reasons.

[–] Turret3857 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

There's the FreeTube and GrayJay desktop & mobile apps, as well as PipePipe, NewPipe, and LibreTube for mobile exclusively.

[–] Cramszilla@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ive had freetube and libretube break more often than naught lately. Having to switch vpn servers and invidious instances is a pain. Thanks google!

[–] Turret3857 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They should work fine without a VPN if that's any consolation. Its what I do when they block more than 2 servers in a row because I can't be bothered

[–] Cramszilla@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Makes sense, I just hate not having it on

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago

I'd recommend just using yt-dlp and your favorite video player.

MPV will also automatically invoke it from the command line if you do mpv <youtube URL> but you'll need to turn your cache settings way up if you want any seeking as data is only cached on the MPV side.
