Also they basically never use space suits. They just check to see if it is a class M planet and then are shocked whenever they discover it toxic in some mysterious way.

I was recently watching an episode of TOS, and Spock beamed onto an alien space ship. The first thing he said when he appeared was, "It appears to be a breathable atmosphere," or something like that. Like, YOU JUST FOUND THAT OUT?

I bet he was super calm about it too

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 15 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Yeah, "Oops, should we not have been breathing in these alien plant spores?"

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Every time they take off their helmet I practically scream for them to leave it on

[–] AlolanYoda@mander.xyz 8 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I don't recall ever seeing a helmet to be honest

[–] gregorum@lemm.ee 11 points 2 years ago

In TAS, they made a big deal about having personal shield that performed a similar function, but they often malfunctioned at a similar rate to the transporters and holodecks.

The EVA suit helmets

There are a few episodes

[–] theodewere@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

the ones that make you dance around and say "groovy, man", and feel the need to parrot anarchist demagoguery.. and late paying rent..

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

And when they do use space suits they open their helmets the moment they find an even marginally breathable atmosphere

People who tell you to touch grass have clearly never seen TNG. Wesley touched grass. It almost killed him!

The one exception being Risa. Jamaharon for days.

The artificial weather is making the Federation soft. We have to shut it down.

The one true paradise

[–] Stamets@startrek.website 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah... You remember that Strange New Worlds episode? You know the one I mean? Kinda figured it was going to happen simply because of the trope. Didn't make it any less monumentally horrifying however...

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 7 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I actually still need to start SNW. It looks good from what clips I've seen.

I'm glad, and not surprised, that this trope is still going strong though!

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I have some minor quibbles with it, but compared to Picard and STD, it’s really spectacular that it even exists.

High praise that I’m not even bothered by the Kirk or Spock recasts. Even if their version of Kirk looks nothing like Shatner, I like the cut of his jib.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I was a little worried about how I'd feel about the recasts.

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Without saying too much, I think their personalities are true to their TOS selves, unlike the caricatures the recasts were in the Abrams movies.

Nurse Chapel is the only classic character that’s been completely reimagined. She’s more more active, and motivated. She’s still got a thing for Spock, but she isn’t just some hopeless wilting flower. This does clash with TOS, but I accept it as overriding TOS Chapel.

Dr. M’Benga, who is a very obscure reoccurring TOS character is the ship’s doctor, and as is Trek tradition, has a lot of screen time.

Chapel and M’Benga have a pretty deep (non romantic) connection.

That's interesting... So no Bones yet?

I wasn't ever clear on the timeline for when they all met.

[–] jrs100000@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Well Bones didn't appear in the pilot or first episode of TOS, so I dont think well get more than a cameo if he shows up at all.

[–] Damage@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 years ago

I mean, we all love the classics, but none of the series were perfect. SNW is excellent trek for me.

[–] Stamets@startrek.website 8 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Well fuck. I'm glad I was as vague as I was then. Remember that comment when you eventually watch it. I think it's Season 1 but I could be wrong. But yes, please start. I'm floored with how utterly amazing the show is. Then again I might be biased from uncontrollable thirst over Pike.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Without knowing much else about the show, the casting for Pike is definitely the draw for me. He looks perfect for the role!

He has a very old-fashioned charming look, like Shatner in his heyday, or the original Pike.

[–] Stamets@startrek.website 5 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Honestly it throws me because sometimes he seems like he'd be the perfect Kirk too. Anson Mount is a whole slab of man I'm glad we've tossed on the Trek grill.

Doesn't help that he's an INCREDIBLE actor. Fucking love that man and his smile. Goddammit if I wasn't already gay...

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Anson Mount is a whole slab of man I'm glad we've tossed on the Trek grill.

I can't get enough of this description. Haha

[–] Stamets@startrek.website 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Glad it had the intended effect and didn't just seem too thirsty lol

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I sent this description to my wife, and she just asked when we were picking up paramount+ again.

[–] Stamets@startrek.website 3 points 2 years ago

The correct answer is today.

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

His hair is just so perfect

[–] Stamets@startrek.website 3 points 2 years ago

I know.... I don't understand how they do it. Dude has Johnny Bravo hair going on.

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 3 points 2 years ago

Episode 7 I believe

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

You are missing out, dude. SNW is the new Trek we've been waiting for. I think it's just as good as Lower Decks

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm getting there! I can't help that I keep rewatching TOS and TNG... lol

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

This is what I'll say: I L O V E SNW, it's truly amazing. I quite like a certain scene in the first episode involving sticks (if/when you get to it you'll know what I mean) and the 3rd, 7th, and 9th episodes of S2 are really good IMHO. For S1 I wasn't keeping track of my favorite episodes as much but I remember thoroughly enjoying episode 8. All the episodes are great though, you really should check it out!

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They have a musical episode that I don't hate!

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

I love the episode but I'll take not hating it!

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

It's a good episode.

Ok, I'll have to!

[–] Damage@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 years ago

I even liked the musical episode

Imagine all the actual paradise planets we never got to see because nothing interesting happened.
