If you are looking for a book WWI, check out “A World Undone” by G.J.Meyer.

The audio book has the added joy of being read by Robin Sachs. Sachs has such a great voice.

While it would take a library of books to get a comprehensive understanding of WWI (COUGH** COUGH WWII Phase I) this book gives the reader a broad understanding of all the various players and “reasonings” behind those players involvement.

It breaks down the war year by year and sprinkles into that breakdown are detailed histories of the following:

  • The Serbs
  • The Hapsburgs
  • The Hohenzollerns
  • The Rommanovs
  • The Ottoman Turks
  • The French and Brits
  • The Junkers
  • The Cossacks

I highly recommend the Audio book.

Thank you for the recommendation.

In schools they don't really teach much about it other than the Archduke's assassination and use of mustard gas. Amazing that it took only 20 years after that war for the continent to get embroiled in another one.

The book dissects/illustrates the madness and horrors of the war really well. The parts I found the most interesting was the background and contextual information on why the war happened.

Like you all I ever learned about WWI was about how some Archduke guy getting killed in some exotically named place Serbia set off the firestorm in Europe.

Amazing that it took only 20 years after that war for the continent to get embroiled in another one

Absolutely and equally amazing was how some of the heroes of WWI (Petain) became the villains of WWII and for the same reasons.

The book is a great “read” I highly recommend it.
