I don't need to write a comment, because "tenrif" in the comments under the article already wrote the perfect one.

Thank you to the Aboriginal Corporation for standing up to the state government -a state LNP government that will do anything to get their hands on this much loved, heritage listed park - one of very few significant parklands left in the inner city area. Not only did the LNP state government explicitly say before the election that there would be no new stadiums built, but they said that none would be built in Victoria Park, a park that had a Masterplan to further nurture its trees and native ecosystem. Then the state government went and overruled 15 pieces of legislation so that developers could get this community treasure. If the LNP government think that they can get away with this who knows what parklands will be next.

sigh please stop, just let it happen

it was a golf course, it's a million times better as a stadium, just let it go

It was a golf course, then it was brought back into being a public park. Lots of consultation was done and some really great plans were drawn up to turn it into a major destination greenspace.

Then a government that campaigned specifically on "no new stadiums" came in and, after getting elected promising otherwise, declared "we're going to destroy this park for a stadium". Fuck that. It's a terrible spot for a stadium. Just rebuild the fucking Gabba. The Gabba is an international icon in cricket. It would literally be win-win to keep the Gabba great and keep our greenspace. Not to mention the fact that the Gabba has better public transport access, and it isn't right next to a hospital where a brand new stadium is likely to create major disruptions to patients, staff, and emergency services every time there's a game on.

Gabba? was tried, people didn't like

The politics of the rebuild of the Brisbane Cricket Ground – known for decades as the Gabba – has become a particularly sore point for the government. The plan will require the demolition of a neighbouring, heritage listed school. The multi-billion dollar price tag is also controversial.

And plans for relocating the AFL and cricket teams that use the Gabba as a home ground have also run into trouble, with the Brisbane lord mayor Adrian Schrinner withdrawing his support for the Gabba rebuild last week after the botched announcement of a replacement venue.

and yep I was one of the people saying boo hoo, the school is tiny and it needs demolition because as you know, it's already bursting as the seams https://maps.app.goo.gl/drRGKrDu5yUv7hMX7

I don't care about all this pre-works controversy because once it's done people will get over it, but here we are nearly 2 years later...

But nope, labor felt like there was too much backlash to it so went with the even worse proposal of using QSAC which was the worst idea i could imagine, billions for a temporary stadium

You can also thank the Greens:

Jonathan Sriranganathan says the Greens will focus on opposing the Gabba redevelopment in their council campaign.

So here we are, afaik there's no other good place to put it, gabba can't be done, QSAC horrible choice, Victoria Park it is, and tbf looks like still plenty of parks/green space:

edit: i'm not sure if the above pic is what is actually planned

Personally I'm not opposed to the school being moved. But it needs to be moved to a sensible location. The problem with the previous government's plan was that they were going to move the school to somewhere literally outside its own catchment. People in Kangaroo Point would have over an hour walk to get to school.

afaik there’s no other good place to put it

My top two proposals (if the Gabba was being ruled out) were Eagle Farm racecourse and the RNA showgrounds. Neither of these were even considered by the committee. In part because the head of the committee is also on the board of Racing Queensland, creating a conflict of interest.

Sure, if that sketch (and you're right to be sceptical, it's a very early mock-up not a serious plan) ends up being accurate, there's still a lot of green space. But it's an enormous degradation compared to the plan BCC put out in 2022. Especially with those enormous, ugly, multistorey carparks taking up a good quarter of the site.
