I find it funny how my country seem to have an animal related scandal every few decades. And by scandal I mean hypocritical and sensitive foreigners becoming upset at zoos doing zoo stuff.

My country has more pigs than it has people and the vast majority of pork we produce is exported to you all in the rest of the world. People are getting upset that a zoo allows people to donate old and sick pets for feedings when the very same people are the ones contributing to the pig production industry that is not just inhumane and grotesque, it also destroys my country's nature. 60% of Danish soil is used for farming and most of those fields are used to grow pigs feed. On top of that we import soybeans for pigs feed from South America which not only means more pollution due to unnecessary transport, but also the destruction of more rainforest so that the soy farmers can keep up with the demand. Oh, and we also transport our pigs to Poland for euthanasia because it's cheaper, adding to the transportation pollution bill. You'd think that with how much pollution and space Danish farmers take up and dumps into the world, that their contribution to our BNP would be fucking astronomical, but no. They contribute less than 2 fucking percent. If it was up to me, pork production would be made illegal tomorrow and people wpuld have to look for another food source than pork.

If anyone complains about a Danish zoo feeding animals old pets that have been humanely euthanized beforehand, yet still consume pork, you have absolutely no leg to stand on and you're a hypocrite.

Why not sell it as an amusement ride for visiting Americans wearing MAGA caps?
See the animals up close. Step right inside the cage!

They don’t want to poison the animals by feeding them trash.

This is better than euthanizing them and just throwing the bodies away or burning them. These animals are predators and need to eat meat. The headline makes it sound like they’re feeding dogs and cats to them, but the article only mentions small livestock/pets like chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs.

Ideally you wouldn’t need to euthanize any at all, but if nobody steps up to take them there aren’t a lot of options that aren’t also cruel (like overcrowding them).

fuck Aalborg Zoo, go to Givskud instead. You can see this cute wolf!

[–] Nangijala@feddit.dk 1 points 2 hours ago

Lol. What do you think the wolf eats? Or does it only matter when the word "pet" is attached to the animal that being used for food?

That's a good boy

That’s dark. But better than euthanasia, I guess?

[–] Codpiece@feddit.uk 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They euthanise them first, they don’t just chuck them in.

"Viggo, get the euthanasia stick"

Western Europe doesn't really have an issue with overpopulation and resulting kill shelters for cats and dogs. In fact, all of my friends with dogs have to import them from Eastern Europe. So, I really hope they're not getting cats and dogs donated to them...

But, they also explicitly say "chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs." Not sure how many these unwanted pets there are that it will feed their animals much...

But it also seems like this article suggests this zoo has a history of unnecessary euthanization of zoo animals and feeding to other animals...

Isn't it better that they go back into the food chain instead of being tossed in an cremation oven?

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 day ago

In my country (USA) people abandon unwanted animals outdoors. A heavily domesticated (as in raised from birth with people) animal is pretty likely to die if they're left in the middle of nowhere, which this country has in abundance.
