Working my way through the albums here, and we're yet to hit Reload. This was the lead single from the album which was widely considered b-sides for load, and panned for it. But for me, this is a great track

Mid-tempo, fairly standard song structure which has seen a big presence in Metallica's setlists over the years, mostly due to how easy it is to break apart and mash up from year to year. Also featured in S&M where it gained a second life with that string section. Will have to do S&M next! It also features a rare guest vocalist on the album copy, a Marianne Faithfull who does a haunting outro, who sadly passed away last January

The video itself is also a great watch, featuring anti-gravity and cost a big sum for 1997

As always, who has seen it live? Does anyone remember seeing the music video for the first time even?

I was one of the minority at the time that was really digging what they were putting out. It wasn't necessarily what I had hoped for, but it was a damn interesting foray outside of heavier metal, and beyond metal entirely in a few songs. Can't say every song was great, and there were a few on both loads that were meh.

But this particular song was on the great end of things. Even that outro by itself is a musical perfect storm, just the exact right thing to do. But the rest holds up as a great hard rock/metal song even without it. I can't call it a b-side in any pejorative sense at all.

I did catch a show later that year, or maybe early the next. I can't recall if they did Memory or not, but they were absolutely killing it live. I don't remember the set being very loaded tbh, but that may be my bad memory not remaining.

Reload didn't hit as well as load for me, on average, but this and low man's lyric are always on my main Metallica playlist for sure.

I definitely remember the music video. Not my favorite of their videos, but I remember being really hyped after the first time I saw it.

Reload is perhaps my least listened to album. I didn't start listening to them maybe 2000 which would explain things also, lots of back catalogue to drool over before going back to it. But I did give it a spin recently and it is that: a good hard rock album. But if I was it that mood QOTSA or AC/DC or Blackcherry or Ghost tickle me more these days.

Still, as you say, this is a great track and does demonstrate song great songwriting from the 4 of them
