The Smithsonian said Saturday that it would update an exhibit at the National Museum of American History to reflect all impeachment proceedings in U.S. history after a placard was removed last month.

"As the keeper of memory for the nation, it is our privilege and responsibility to tell accurate and complete histories," the Smithsonian said in a statement.

No they won't. HitlerPig will fire the head of the Smithsonian, and the new guy will remove it immediately...

...before he starts selling off all of their holdings, and giving the money to HitlerPig.

Should have never been removed and if they are punished it should only prove that very point.

We have no king. Period.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

"We" don't want and won't tolerate a king.

But at the moment, "we've" voted for and allowed a king.

Can't really blame it on the Smithsonian. They're getting mixed messages.

As long as "the king" is in power, these petty struggles aren't going to do anything but hurt the public services.

The parades need to be weekly and bigger.

Indeed - the pushback needs to be constant and broad.

Also, it’s not as if he won by some mandate defining majority - the lack of accurate news coverage is stunning. He squeaked in (and this despite felony convictions, impeachments and far more) and they did and do treat it as just politics.

WTF?! Even the billionaire owners have to know the only back he covers is his own.

Leopards keep handing out lessons but people refuse to listen.

Hope the director of The Smithsonian doesn’t get fired over this.

[–] Zron@lemmy.world 9 points 9 hours ago

I hope it doesn’t come to that, but I do hope he actually gets fired instead of resigning.

So many people have bent the knee to trump for fear of their jobs.

He’s the director of the Smithsonian, if he still wants or needs work, I’m sure he can get another job. It’s time for people in charge to actually put their foot down and make trump send goons to fire them. Make him actually work a little to destroy this country, instead of rolling over at the first vacant glare he sends their way.

I hope they do for removing it in the first place. Censoring history is unforgivable.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 59 points 1 day ago

Me too but maybe it is worth more to the director to protect the integrity of the Smithsonian Institute.

A bigger picture type thing.

The director IMO is setting a better example than most us people and politicians.

Or defenestrated.

Dont bring Antifa into this! You know they've dubbed antifa a terrorist organization! (Whatever that means)

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 37 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Yep, there are three unmistakable signs of a terrorist:

  1. They dislike fascists.
  2. They dislike genocide.
  3. They dislike being exploited by billionaires.
[–] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 day ago

Wow, they sound like my kind of people.

Antifa is literally an abbreviation for "Anti-Fascist". It means exactly that; nothing more, nothing less.

Did anyone read 1984 and know what doublespeak is?

Doublespeak refers to language used to disguise, distort, or reverse the meaning of words, often to make something unpleasant sound more acceptable.

So antifa, woke and other words that are good things are reversed to sound bad.

It seems some don't know the meaning and are down voting rather than lookng it up.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

I did, we're awful close to going full 1984. Some would argue, depending on what country you live in, we're already there.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Right next to Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, I suppose.

[–] Gumbyyy@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Literally yes, from what I remember when reading about this a few days ago. It's an exhibit on impeachment in general, not specifically just about Trump's impeachments.

Waffling is just going to piss everyone off. Were they just hedging their bets or what? The ‘we’re just renovating it’ justification is somewhat suspicious, as museum objects/displays removed for whatever reason usually have a note indicating their removal and why, and aren’t just spirited off into the night.

But it also sounds like this was a plaque and not an actual object associated with an exhibition? So I don’t know, they had to know people were going to notice and be upset by it. I might be over-sensitized to it, but a lot of this sounds like ass covering to me. Maybe it’s because they were worried and trying to save their own hides. But we desperately fucking need institutions like this to not just fetch their fainting chairs as soon as the right wing outrage machine farts in their direction.
