Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

I thought it was the gays, oh wait no its the transes, hang on we're back to the 1500s and are just saying "it's smut". It's very "violent video games turn men into violent monsters".

Want to really know what's radicalising young men: a mixed hangover of "the provider role" clinging on, two decades of economic implosion, and normalised sexism aimed at addressing systemic injustices. That's how you end up with radicalised young men.

Porn doesn't cause men to become violent any more than video games do. There's no study I'm aware of or a direct link to show causation other than the sensationalization of the topic.

This feels like just another excuse to seize control over the levers of privacy the people of a country have access to.

I remember hearing this argument for videogames 🙄

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 8 hours ago

~50 years of legal porn and society still hasn't collapsed.

@Davriellelouna@lemmy.world
I wonder if certain... genres of adult content (such as female dominance and lesdom) would be "extreme porn" and/or "violence against women" according to his (and whoever shares his) worldview... Guess these people don't know how there are different... "entertainment subcultures".

Also, the obvious was already said throughout the comment section: just another justification for things such as what's happening with itch.io and Steam, alongside the KYC requirement that's been implemented in many places worldwide. It's tiring, really tiring to watch these things unfolding in real time across the globe.

Oh lesbian bdsm has a history of being particularly cracked down on as "violence against women." The other option would be for lawmakers and academics to meet with communities for sapphic sadomasochism (and for women involved in bdsm as a whole, straight submissive women also deserve protection from lawmakers seeking to protect them) and to try to find paths forward that create a safer and more free world.

Therefore, we need more intrusive surveillance, right?!

[–] germanatlas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

I watched a Sasha Grey compilation and now a bust of Karl Marx appeared on my desk

[–] socsa@piefed.social 3 points 5 hours ago

Fuck yeah, spread it

[–] SwampYankee@feddit.online 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I watched Mia Khalifa and now I'm an Islamist.

[–] burgerchurgarr@lemmus.org 7 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

That’s wild because Mia Khalifa is a Christian

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

I've seen video evidence she's not very observant, though.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 3 points 5 hours ago

Maybe she's really into that "love thy neighbor" thing! Also, Jesus washed the feet of whores but whipped moneylenders, so there's clearly a hierarchy to those rules and it's not looking good for christian capitalists.

[–] burgerchurgarr@lemmus.org 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah I don’t want to badmouth her but I’m also really wondering if she was married to all those dudes? Like is it allowed to have multiple husbands at the same time? There was this one video where she had sex with both of her alleged husbands at the same time and it somehow leaked to the internet

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

I was kind of assuming that like any number of other pornstars she doesn't share the faith of her ancestors, and that was a joke. I guess I don't actually know, though.

[–] talkingpumpkin@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Which of these ones you think is more likely?

  1. the police head reported the results of a scientific study that explores the correlation between crimes and porn preferences
  2. some idiot boomer finally managed to visit pornhub and was shocked by what they found

(not saying the boomer would be the police head - I don't know him and for all I know he's a person of at least average intelligence)

[–] kbal@fedia.io 78 points 1 day ago (3 children)

That's not really convincing and leaves me entirely unsure which is the more likely explanation:

  • Young men's taste in porn has turned towards more violent stuff, which would be a bad sign for society at large
  • Shitty algorithms on porn sites are pushing people towards more objectionable stuff just like they do on youtube
  • Porn is about the same since the 1970s and the idea that it's getting worse is a fabrication
[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

I'm going to go for 3. The vintage stuff can be really gross and misogynistic sometimes. Which is what you'd expect from the era depicted in Mad Men.

More like:

  • The chief of the garda is a sick bastard who thinks everyone likes what he likes
[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 1 day ago

While Harris admitted his own observations were more anecdotal, he said that both the descriptions of incidents and the attitudes of offenders show that online violence has been normalised.

Pretty much

[–] Shiggles@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I would definitely say the middle. Don’t get me wrong, I avidly enjoy bdsm, but most of the “rough stuff” on pornhub doesn’t look particularly enjoyable for any party - amateur has always been better for that sort of thing.

I don’t use Tik Tok, but I believe there have also been some questionable trends regarding choking and other kink stuff being shown in unhealthy ways(constrict the bloodways, not the windpipe, folks!)

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Yeah as a woman who has been involved in irl bdsm communities most of her adult life, but doesn't really watch mainstream porn (I read what I read), I'm not surprised.

Whenever bdsm goes even remotely mainstream we get a lot of people who learned to do what we do via unreliable sources. Those sources range from "it seemed hot so I tried without thinking" to, books like 50 shades or the story of O or the gor books, to whatever the hell they hear on tiktok or fetlife or reddit or usenet… And for every person who shows up and fucks up in front of people who can correct them, it's safe to assume there are quite a few doing stupid and dangerous shit in the privacy of their bedrooms.

[–] lath@piefed.social 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's the other way around chief, radicalized young men seek out extreme porn because they ain't getting any of that vanilla loving.
And the way to getting that is properly educating them on consent and treating their partner with the equal love and respect they yearn for.

[–] pirateKaiser@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Also going and and actually interacting with those.... "Females", was it?

[–] killingspark@feddit.org 6 points 19 hours ago

Wrong! You don't interact with the females. That's needy beta behavior. You make the females interact with you, they need to feel their need for you

Did I get this one right Mr. Tate?

[–] lath@piefed.social 5 points 20 hours ago

Stop it Patrick, you're scaring them!

[–] Mika@sopuli.xyz 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lack of any punishment for antisocial behavior for young men in Ireland is radicalising them. Garda doesn't even try to arrest any of them when they acting like shit because they are getting released anyway.

[–] CackNClap 2 points 20 hours ago

Punishment, treatment, family support, victim support, anything would be nice!

[–] ThePyroPython@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Irish lads better be prepared for the government to be taking away your wanking licences.

An Armalite in one hand, and a tissue box in the other.
