The naming scheme we followed, is based on the first letter of the car's brand—so for example, a Volvo gets a name starting with 'V', like Vincent.

Anyone else done/do this? If so, what was your car + name + naming scheme?

James. No particular reason.

My other cars never had names, but I love this one to pieces and it goes like the clappers.

[–] Manticore@lemmy.nz 3 points 2 days ago

My ebike is Gusteau (Gusto), or Gus.

I had an old Meriva I called her Marge. She was tall and blue. But my 2008 Lexus SUV … I can’t name it. Nothing sticks man. Occasionally I call it Lexy

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

My Truck is named Earle.

My wife’s car is name scarlet.

My jetski is named Blue Five.

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

frog car!!

it's the green one in the back

[–] Zectivi@piefed.social 5 points 2 days ago

I theme the name based on the car. It could be the model, or it could be what it is known for.

I had a VW GTI named “Gertie”.

Currently I have a Subaru STI named “Satori”, and a Hyundai Ioniq 5 named “Electra”.

The Prius (he/him)

I've named mine except for my current one. None of the names have felt right. I have to fix a major problem with the soft top cover deck, so that may inspire me.

It's frustrating because it's a great car and it's fun to drive. Maybe we just haven't bonded fully yet.

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

I had Horsybird 1, Horsybird 2 and Dobby. My current one doesn't have a name.

[–] Usernameblankface@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Any name that seems to fit the character of the car. In hindsight, based on personifying the car's flaws.

One was a Saturn SL2 that had a leaky exhaust, sometimes hesitated to start, and the automatic transmission shifted aggressively. Oscar, because it seemed grouchy all the time.

Another was a manual transmission Volkswagen Passat 2.0 with a tiny turbo and some neat safety features that still worked, including automatically holding the brakes for a hill start to prevent rolling backward. Not particularly fast, but once it got going it just kept accelerating up through the gears, as if rising to a challenge. I named it Walter, it just seemed to fit.

My current car is a 2014 Ford Focus with the "bad" transmission. It needs to either go or stop, asking it to accelerate too slowly burns up the clutches in a hurry, thus the terrible reputation for the dual clutch automatic. The harder I accelerate, the better the gas milage, up until it starts spinning the tires.

Idk what to call this one.

[–] vinceman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Is that with the Dual Clutch? If so, you could probably just get a new clutch if it's in good shape.

My wife named her first SUV - a dinky Equinox - “pebbles”, purely because it was a light stone grey.

Her next SUV - a more beefy 4Runner that can actually hold the Gunner dog crate comfortably - is “snowflake”, purely because it was a pristine snow white.

I think I’m seeing a pattern here with my wife.

[–] twinnie@feddit.uk 5 points 2 days ago

My mate had a crappy old van for his run around because it was the cheapest thing he could get his hands on, we called it the Red Enigma. My brother has a crappy old silver hatchback that was actually pretty fast and we called it the Silver Bullet.

So I guess, colour and whatever sounds right.

[–] toomanypancakes@piefed.world 4 points 2 days ago

My current car is named the Goose, I had never named one before. No particular reason, but I got goose license plate holders and a goose with a knife sticker on the side of the mirror to embellish the ensemble. Still need a good goose to put in the back

[–] Glitch@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Honda Pilot - Goose (top gun reference) Minivan - Vincent (van Go[gh]! pun) Motorcycle - Stormy (named after Odd Thomas character) First Car - Sexy (doctor who reference)

[–] Pulptastic@midwest.social 5 points 2 days ago

But who is Stormy Waters?

[–] Canopyflyer@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

1970 Chevrolet Impala: Liberty (I bought it from a guy in Liberty, KY).

1997 Nissan 200SX SE-R: Dot (It was Pacific Blue)

2003 Acura TL: Sally (Generic name for a generic car)

2014 Camry LE: Pearl (It was Cosmic Mica Gray which gave the car a pearlescent sheen).

I currently have a 2019 Camry Hybrid XLE, but have yet to name it. I'm leaning toward "Betty", because the car has so many warnings, alarms, and notifications that I feel like I'm being bitched at when I drive it.

I have owned several cars over the years that I never named. My absolute favorite car I've ever owned was a 1985 Corolla GT-S that I raced in Pro Solo for a few years and it never received a name. The next car I owned was a 1992 Sentra SE-R and it never got a name either. Also had a 1969 Chevelle that I drag raced in my teen years, but no name there.

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 5 points 3 days ago

Not really but we occasionally refer to it as "Big Black" for obvious reasons.

[–] sol6_vi@lmmy.retrowaifu.io 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

1994 Civic - Jasmine, named for the taco bell employee that congratulated me immediately after buying it.

2003 Sebring - was just the garbage piece of shit because it was a garbage piece of shit

2014 Elantra - Diane, Diane Young played on FM radio during the test drive.

2010 Civic - just bought it after my previous car was totaled in a rear ending >:I bought it with the trash insurance payout and it's a lemon don't know if it will last long enough to get a name.

[–] Lemvi@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 3 days ago

Lumpi, in German "Lumpen" means "rag" or "rags", its a 20 year old Dacia Sandero with 170.000 kilometers.

[–] Courantdair@jlai.lu 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I didn't name all of them, but here are the ones:

  • My small everyday car: Titine (see other comment about that)
  • My camper van: Léon (In french "Léon le fourgon")
  • My '78 spitfire: Rosie

I had a murdered G37s named Stella. Was a fun time in life. Happy not to have a car at all now.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Blue 2025 Subaru Forester = Beast

White 2015 Hyundai Sonata = Stormtrooper (also has a stormtrooper ornament hanging from the rear view mirror)

[–] Atin@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Yes, usually after the first letter of the rego plate. My current car, a 2020 Veloster is called Siggy.

[–] TheRedSpade@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I kinda wanna name my car, but nothing has inspired yet.

[–] sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

My cousin had a 1988 Dodge minivan with plastic covered seats and no AC. She called it "Big Ralf"

No real naming scheme, mostly just stupid names because they're funny, though a couple names have been roughly related to the car to which they belonged.

  • Pobjoy
  • Probably Jessie (yes, "probably" is part of the name)
  • Probably Jenny
  • My Boy Blue
  • Winona
  • Jules
[–] jpreston2005@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

My cars are usually named after old women, because I subconsciously relate older women with comfort and kindness. Gertie, and Mathilde.

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago

xev yoyo in lime green.

I call her tinkerbell

[–] Suck_on_my_Presence@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My first car, my lovely Mazda 2. It was tiny but perfect for me. My friends called it a jellybean and that stuck until Bean just started being used. I loved that Bean so much.

But I just got a new car and a friend of mine said it looks like a shoe. So now I have Shoe! Which I think is funny

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

when my first car dies I'm gonna be devastated. I love it so much >~<

[–] ptc075@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Normally no. However, I do own a 1968 Chrysler station wagon that I've taken to calling "the Duchess of Rustess". No, it doesn't even rhyme, but it does makes me smile.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 2 points 2 days ago

My first car was named Sora Aoi which means sky blue. Don’t mind that it’s also the name of a popular Japanese porn star.

I also had a white Kia Soul that looked like a stormtrooper helmet so I was trying to pick a good reference name, but couldn’t decide on one.

My subaru is called “Subarashii”, because it’s excellent.

[–] Schwim@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

I name them based on their personalities.

59 beetle - Zippy 79 Bronco - bog 07 wrangler - Lt Dan

[–] OopsOverbombing@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I've named all but one of my cars.

Spunky - 1986 Mazda RX-7 (Untitled) - 1997 VW Jetta The Dirty Hooker - 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 Heidi - 1998 BMW M3 Yuki - 2004 Subaru Impreza Outback

I have Heidi and Yuki currently. 🤷‍♂️

[–] reddwarf@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago

Volvo (V60CC) -> Swedish -> Viking
