“Turn”?

This is more like “full speed ahead on the course that anyone with a couple of brain cells to rub together could have predicted”.

Yeah, they turned a full 360 degrees.

I'm gonna be honest, I think USA is lost.

It's not even a year, and they gutted it's systems, institutions and beliefs. Shaped people's minds and began intereference on international scale. Burned bridges, built walls and set up traps.

No matter what happens now, changes made by anything close to being "progressive" in USA system are too slow and, most probably, will fail to revert the changes. If they even get selected, or get a chance to be selected.

I am not from USA, but I am patriot for my country and seeing a huge, proud country like USA fall in such a short time is nothing but terrifying. A humble reminder of how brittle are the systems we create, and how much they rely on others "playing fair".

The US isn't collapsing in a short time this has been building for decades and is a prime example of an old quote "The fall of empires is slow right until it isn't". The fact of the matter is the collapse of the American Empire was inevitable since the Louisiana purchase, had expansion stopped at the Appalachian or at least slowed for longer the accumulated cracks could've been solved but alas that is long done history. Don't look at the US as a nation it's an empire originally built on a civic mythology the failure of the empire is directly correlated to the death of said civic mythology.

Anyways use the United States as the United States used the Roman Republic, an object lesson and a warning.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 14 points 2 days ago

The US has been declining for decades. It is now just accelerating as the cracks are reaching a critical level and the structural integrity of the entire system is collapsing.

This has been inevitable as the elites clinging to wealth and power only ever grabbed more of it, instead of relenting the injustice. In that sense it is also necessary for something better to be built after. Until then things will get worse at an accelerating pace, but the faster people step in and take back control, the fast this can be over.

A lot of people like to speculate about the future, but usually, it's meant to be a reassurance: "It couldn't happen here!"

It's often that we see that such speculation was horrendously naive. All of it was built on assumptions like "people can't be that stupid" or "people wouldn't just let that happen". Yeah. About that.

This may be basic stuff, but people tend to forget the basic stuff.

I would roll my eyes at this, but if I were to do so it would be so hard as to pop them out of my head. We flew off the “Orwellian” cliff months ago, and we are free falling into a canyon of insanity deeper than the Mariana’s trench.

To call the trump administration “Orwellian” is an understatement almost as insane as Trump itself. Does language even exist anymore?

The scariest thing is not the pressure the White House put on the museum, it's the fact that they caved in.

I'm way more scared about all the people in public institutions bending the knee to the bully than the bully himself. The us population need examples of resistance to rise up as a people, and so far there are almost none.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 27 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The institutions insist he’ll be gone in 4 years and will go back to normal.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Even if the Drumpfster is gone in four years, it will probably take 100+ years to undo the dammage he did to the US and especially it's reputation.

Just look at what he has done so far, and realize that he has eight times longer remaining in this mandate period.

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We HOPE only 8 times longer.

[–] flightyhobler@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Actually, some of us hope for much less than that.

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

We can't attack him apparently, but what if we make an organized effort against anyone who caves?

[–] don@lemmy.ca 70 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska both worried that Trump’s move would make it so people can’t trust the data the administration is putting out.

lol the only ones who trust what the trump crime regime puts out are the ones who’d happily eat the rotten feces directly from his ass given the slightest of chances.

[–] Skiluros@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Isn't Rand Paul that demagogue who was lying about taking horse tranquilizer for COVID?

[–] don@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Not horse tranquilizer, but dewormer, it seems.

Edit: a different source.

[–] char_stats@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 days ago

As disgusting as accurate.

[–] ansiz@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This has been the full steam ahead plan since Reagan at least. You can see the social programs and reforms done by LBJ in the late 60s and some of the things Nixon did like the EPA. If I'm not mistaken Nixon then flirted with a government healthcare Medicare for all plan but it didn't get far.

Since then it's just been naked class warfare, capitalist pillaging, and wealth accumulation for the 0.1%.

[–] overthere@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 days ago

This was before my time, so it’s always interesting to read about Nixon and see that he was way to the left of the current Democrats and saw a lot of positive things happen under his terms. He’s remembered as a crook and a boogeyman, but by modern day standards, the Watergate scandal would barely even raise an eyebrow.

How times have changed.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago

I don't think you know what "turn" means

[–] swade2569@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

"They did the thing we're now going to do. How awful they were."

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago

Is this one of those things where a 1700s courier just delivered the news to CNN from the west and it just kind of takes 10 years to make it that far? Because where I've been sitting it looks slightly different.

[–] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

Fuck CNN.

"We've milked everything else long enough. Time to go to fearmongering."
