That's actually one of my main problems with CIG's "open development". They did have a decent amount of openness early on - yes, there was a lot of theory crafting but we also had a nice amount of discussion about their design decisions as well as post mortems like when they decided to rethink the flight model for the second (I think?) time for example.
That approach slowed down over the years until they switched to spewing a lot of content with not much useful info provided there. Anything that looks shiny enough at a glance but doesn't go into much details if you really read into it, which is a shame because I'd love to learn about their thought process behind some of their decisions.

Video content slowdown is understandable - they're trying to both finish the black hole that is Squadron 42 and ploughing through dozens and dozens of bugs with each patch. Neither of these makes for a sexy topic from a marketing perspective and that's, unfortunately, what CIG is focusing on these days.

What's worse for me is the fact that a lot of info and discussion moved away from the official sources and happens in private discord servers, local cons and the like. Why does some random PvP or pirate org has more say about the future of the game than the rest of the community? Why is this info not shared with the rest of us?
This is a far bigger issue than the lack of weekly videos to be honest.

Pretty good video despite the clickbait title. Thanks for the share.

I actually disagree that SC ever leveraged open development. Early videos were more theorycrafting and later stuff was more about maintaining confidence to keep the cash shop rolling (base game sales account for maybe 10-15% of their the money they get).

Something like Plan B: Terraform (you can literally discuss game mechanics, engine limitations, current features with devs on discord and steam) or Colony Survival do actually use open development.

That being said, while the title is a bit bombastic for my tastes, there is some interesting exploration of recent changes in CIG's video content strategy, that's why I decide to post this.

I think this could be interesting for non-sceptics as well.
