Before cloth was so insanely cheap, and used packs practically free, that was a hella multipurpose rig!

A square of cloth is too useful to be without when you're outdoors.

  • Strain water
  • Wipe your face
  • Wet it and wrap it around your neck
  • Wrap your neck when it's cold
  • Tie it to a pole with your gear in it

I have a gaiter in both my water and land bags. Sometimes two!

Poles are handy!

  • Walking stick for tough terrain
  • Fighting other hobos
  • Carrying your handkerchief

I carry a "spider yeetin' stick" in the summer. Monster orb weaver blocking the trail! Wrap her and yet her in the woods. Path clear, spider unharmed.

You can also wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat, wrap it around your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal, and also wave it as a distress signal.

I thought someone was leaving Poorly Drawn Lines, and I wanted to know why!

For those curious, it's called a bindle.

That's funny, because I always thought it was knapsack. That's a bit of language interference, because in dutch a bindle is called a "knapzak"
