Ah yes I know, we’ll announce to a diametrically opposed geopolitical enemy that we’re gonna move the part of our nuclear triad that is supposed to be the quietest and most sneaky further towards enemy surveillance and into shallower waters thus making them easier to detect and surveil.

The genius move would be to do that but keep a couple in stealth mode. As to whether the very stable genius would do that is another matter.

And maybe the Russians would see right through that, because they're not stupid. Hmm.

The genius move would be to say absolutely nothing about where they are patrolling. You know, like literally every single other country that runs SSBN patrols, including us, have done until now.

Politicians routinely use the press in this manner to send messages to adversaries.

A nephew of mine was serving on board the USS Hartford back in 2020 when they took a CNN camera crew under the Arctic circle and surfaced through the ice. You can find lots of similar news clips involving most/all military branches with just a little bit of effort.

And back in the 60’s my dad worked at MITRE where he held a top secret clearance. He worked on a missile defense program that was so highly classified at the time that he said only about six people knew the full scope of it. A few months after a successful test, President Kennedy announced it during a state of the union address. My dad is convinced he was sending a public warning to the USSR about our capabilities.

Shutting the fuck up in any context at all is not in Trump's playbook.

Bring back Operation Chrome Dome. B2s loitering outside Russian airspace, just waiting to strike. Make them sweat.

Yes, and make them so nervous to make a mistake! Can't wait for the end of the world, right.

Eh, it's about time someone called them on their bluster.

There are fanatics in Russia. Enough to end the world? Maybe, are those dice you really want to roll with a moron in charge of the US?

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 2 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

I get it, but escalation is scary and Russia has been only blabbering so far while this is some actual shit. I'm sure Russia will respond in similar fashion and then the Orange might response to that as well and then .. ya know, before we know rockets start flying.

I guess that is one way to avoid releasing Epstein files 🤪

Yep, people don't know what a defense doctrine is and actually eat up the idea that nationalist grandstanding is effective diplomacy. Stupid.
