And everyone thought registries were only for sex offenders. If it works to punish them then why not on those who don't want to work?

Does it come with a registry of employers who no-show interviews? Or post ghost-job-offerings?

[–] odelik@lemmy.today 11 points 8 hours ago

Want to screw over somebody's employability in Ohio?

  1. Create a fake resume, & apply for jobs.
  2. Get interviews, no-show and ghost calls.
  3. #&%@~^!
  4. PROFIT!

It should be illegal for an employer to know anything about you.

They make a job posting on a government ran site.

They can't see any information about the applicants, the first to apply is chosen.

The company employs the applicant and they start working.

ONLY THEN SHOULD AN EMPLOYER LEGALLY BE ABLE TO DECIDE IF YOU CAN'T DO THE JOB.

fuck this system of forcing people to pay to live but never guaranteeing any work.

Actually, at my company, half of the job interview appointments are no-shows. Just cancel the appointment if you don’t wanna come ffs

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 5 points 8 hours ago

And yet the employer who scheduled an interview with me was no call, no show, and never returned my call or email. This is time I could have been doing anything else, including another interview.

As this is a bill written by fascists, it will of course not attempt to regulate ghost job postings.

WTF?

Once I missed a job interview for Dollar General, because Google, in their infinite wisdom, automatically filed their email to me in the spam folder..

Thankfully I'm not in Ohio, but how long before other states start doing this shit?

[–] only_in_ohio@sh.itjust.works -1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

If implemented, there should be some reasonable limits indeed. But many are regulars sending CVs to hundreds of random companies (or using some automated programs to accomplish this), and then don’t even bother to inform that they have no plans for coming

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

And the reason people automate those sort of applications is largely because of the vast number of ghost job listings, where people say that out of 100 online applications, there might only be 3 or so that are actual listings and not fake, and they're lucky to even get one interview.

If anything, they should totally outlaw fake ghost job listings, not try targeting the victim applicants stuck wasting their time applying for more than likely fake listings.

Small government™

Texas and Florida will make a bunch of noise before implementing it. However, I believe Utah may do it before them.

That's bizarre cyberpunk bullshit

This is a good sign, it means somebody is hurting for labor.

I don't see how how this fixes their problem either. They are still short on people to work.

Obviously this is anti worker behavior and it can't be tolerated

I'm not sure where you get that they're hurting for labor. In recent years, companies have mostly been laying people off or outright firing them, to downsize in favor of AI and automated replacements, while the CEOs pat themselves on the back with fatter pay raises for themselves and their own bank accounts.

And let's not forget about the orange menace, one of his favorite things to say and do is "You're fired!" to government workers.

Do tell me fellow lemming, what companies are actually hiring these days?

I'm not sure where you get that they're hurting for labor

It's been the trend since 2021 that fewer people are willing to accept jobs that pay ridiculously little or otherwise abuse workers.

THAT'S the kind of labor they're hurting for: the kind who are so desperate/stupid/timid/more than one of the above that they'll put up with literally anything.

companies have mostly been laying people off or outright firing them

Which is often a mistake that leads to long term lack of labor in exchange for short term share dividends.

Firing people doesn't necessary mean that those people aren't needed. In the case of the kinds of companies you're talking about, it more often means that the company is run by greedy and shortsighted idiots.

to downsize in favor of AI and automated replacements

Which is the most idiotic of it all, since the technology and systems to do so effectively don't even EXIST yet! No matter how much Silicon Valley pushes it as the miraculous solution that will make all workers superfluous, it can't actually do that. At least not yet, and hopefully not in our lifetimes.

while the CEOs pat themselves on the back with fatter pay raises for themselves

Yup!

Do tell me fellow lemming, what companies are actually hiring these days?

Many are TRYING to hire while offering pay and terms that nobody in their right mind would accept, except if forced by the consequences of oppressive laws such as this one

Unemployment numbers been running in historical low since covid and along with the demographic shift with boomer retiring.

Young workers entering the work and some feds are hurting but these numbers are barely impacting unemployment

https://wolfstreet.com/2025/08/01/slowing-supply-of-immigrant-labor-slowing-job-growth-keep-the-job-market-in-balance-and-the-unemployment-rate-low-push-up-wages-powell-talked-about-it/

Federal government jobs (civilian employment) shrank by 12,000 in July, to 2.93 million jobs, the sixth month in a row of declines. Since January, federal government civilian headcount has dropped by 84,000.

That's 84k in labor force that's pushing 170m

Middle level hiring is brisk with expectation of tech along anything blue collar from factory work to services. This of course is regional just like housing market.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Oh then they probably shouldn't've made laws that pushed the state's queer residents out. I sincerely hope they starve for labor over that shit. I hope every republican politician in ohio is as inconvenienced as my family was by them

[–] mvirts@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Lol and how exactly would one get access to this system? Just a registered business in Ohio? Anywhere in the US?
