It's nearly midnight gnocci time.

Went to the gemstone and lapidary club show and it was very interesting. Lots of stuff that I just wanted to touch because it was so polished and smooth. Lots of beautiful fossils and a gem faceting demonstration. It's a 2 day thing so I'm going back tomorrow because I've got a guy holding a lapis pendant for me (oops πŸ˜¬πŸ’Έ) and there was a piece of petrified wood that I really liked because it looked nice to hold in my hand and I hope it's still there. I bought an orthoceras pendant as well. I'd like something amber as well. Dammit there were so many things I wanted! I loved the opals and malachite as well.

[–] Catfish@aussie.zone 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Careful with amber, dodgy people cook it to look better than it really is.

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 3 points 17 hours ago

most gemstones are heated to intensify colour, πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ they are still beautiful

the bad amber is ground up into a dust then compressed, synthetic resin may also be added ,

check using a black light, real amber glows a strange milky green, it's not real

the big problem is selling them at a higher price as if they are completely natural, heated are not

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Nice. 😊

and , um, where is this wonderful show πŸ˜€ Found it https://eglc.com.au/events/

I might like an opalised shell fossil or a mosasaur tooth , maybe some moss agate and blue lace agate cabs I can put in rings

It's quite a small event in the local (to me) church hall, but I can look at that sort of thing for ages, and the Minipeelers share my love of fossils and minerals. I'd love to take them to that fossil place out in the eastern side of town, I've heard it's huge! (Edit: I may be thinking of Chrystal World in Devon Meadows?)

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 2 points 15 hours ago

That looks awesome πŸ˜€

and you can stop off at Fossil Beach Mt Martha too πŸ˜€ The fossils are just there to pick up in plain sight, great for the Minis

once it's spring I'm off to the quarry in geelong to dig the fyansford formation

Arrived in WA and seemingly brought shitty weather with me but because of the rain, it's quite warm! I dusted off my Switch after goodness knows how long and played The Gardens Between for most of the flight. Really cute local game though a bit overdone on the 80s nostalgia/Japan theming with the cutscenes... still very beautifully designed, ingenious puzzles - nothing too hard but they scratch your brain in just the right way that makes you feel like an ingenious kid again. So in that regard, top marks for really giving puzzles a feeling and a narrative.

Well, time to get myself out of this shed of a terminal and enjoy a nice meal and a good night's sleep. 😴

I don't think Gibson minds the extra downtime

I love a bacon cheeseburger. Who doesn’t ? but the amount of boring prep followed by REALLY fast cooking sends me into a psychotic frenzy. It almost never seems worth it. Almost…

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 4 points 18 hours ago

a good burger is totes worth the effort 🀀

[–] Duenan@aussie.zone 3 points 18 hours ago

I do the bacon and throw it in the oven on warm on,y yo keep it warm

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I cook the bacon first then foil it. That way I can concentrate on the patty and the chips. I refuse to have a cold burger in my own home.

That’s what I’m saying. At my compound, the burgers are straight off the grill and onto your bun. Super hot and fresh with all the toppings you like. But to get to that point where everything lines up is a fucking chore and barely worth it.

People don’t realise what it takes to make a viciously great burger. Type of meat, fat content, type of bun, perfect crispy bacon, lettuce and tomato has to be crisp and cold, various toppings, sauces, chips, all the rest.. it’s no laughing matter haha.

I’m way too invested in this shit.

There's a food & wine "festival" happening next door to the hotel. We thought about checking it out until we realised we were paying $30ea before trying anything - didnt look like a tasting event but a BUY A COCKTAIL event. Now I'm just enjoying a solo dance party on the balcony while watching people basically need to be carried out...

[–] SpinMeAround@aussie.zone 4 points 18 hours ago

Should add that I'm fully prepared to called emergency services for anyone who looks like they've been abandoned by their friends. Until then, I will dance to this god awful DJ

Movie review. Death on the Tyne. Spoof with Johnny Vegas.

Fun indie movie.

Wondering if I should capitulate to joining Discord to keep in touch with people but age verification is going to be demanded at some point and there’s the risk of drama or scams.

I should be doing more housework or trying to exercise but I’m almost ready to nap.

[–] SaneMartigan@aussie.zone 6 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Avoiding Facebook and Whatsapp has definitely cost me a number of friendships. I attended a funeral recently and as we were running through people not present (work / interstate) they were all keeping in touch via facebook. Age verification will be a drag but there's little point being on a niche social media or messaging service. I can stand proudly with my self hosted XMPP and matrix but no one will be on them.

[–] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 1 points 3 hours ago

It really sucks. I think everyone is so overworked and frantic that the convenience of social media is now mandatory.

Unfortunately I’m not keen on Facebook already so I probably won’t be giving ID

Very important question from Boyo: How many Chuck Norrises could a woodchuck chuck if it was chucking a mural of Chuck made of Chucks.

[–] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 5 points 22 hours ago

The front bedroom was getting quite warm with the sun so I opened the windows to let some air through. Apparently ants were starting a nest in the corner of one of the windows, and few spiders had taken up residence as well. Windows that fully swing open to the inside are not such a good thing in this situation. Full barrier spray has now been applied around both windows and the dead ants vacuumed up.

The day has mostly been good though. I had a nice walk with Mr Woof and have done the weekly cleaning including a change of bed sheets, which are now on the line drying with another load of washing. And tomorrow is predicted to be sunny too.

Today's mental therapy: Moving mulch.

Yesterday the resident magpie was having a fight w/ her (I presume) partner. Was pretty viscous, I've never seen that before. Today they're just wondering around together eating stuff from the lawn like nothing happened. Makes you wonder the sorts of things they fight about. Wasn't territory (they've been there together for years).

"you were snoring all night Graham I barely slept a wink - I am NOT cleaning the nest right now"

Aw naur, I just had a 4 hour nap.

I'll blame the cat; he sat on me and fell asleep, so I did too πŸ˜‚

[–] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 6 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

I've never really managed to get the hang of naps. Falling asleep during the day just doesn't happen.

[–] useless_modern_god@aussie.zone 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Same. Sleeping during the day absolutely wrecks my rhythm.

[–] Eagle@aussie.zone 3 points 20 hours ago

If I'm napping during the day I am unwell...can't do it otherwise.

[–] mertn22@aussie.zone 1 points 16 hours ago

Just concentrate on your breathing and wrap up and throw away all the intruding thoughts.

Alongside my normal market run, I have procured vanilla slice, a FREE book about my beloved Collingwood (having mates among the second hand book stalls has perks) and a lovely interaction with the prettiest puppy I have ever seen. Bernese mountain dogs are so rare in this country
