I love how that was the biggest thing during the election. They never went down and nobody cares.

Wasn't it a big thing when the white house was first built that they didn't want it to be a palace? They wanted to make it clear that it was not meant for a king.
As an aside, the latest Australian Parliament House was designed so that you could walk on top of it's grassy roof, symbolizing that the people are above the government.
Now there are fences around it and you'd be arrested if you tried that.
The symbolism is still clear.
The USA was founded to avoid tariffs on imported goods imposed by a monarch. Trump just took a gross big mac dump on your desire for historical consistency, and then gold-plated it.

For someone to get to work on a government site, you have to pass a background check. Since Secret Service is involved, they will check social media as well.
Clark Construction is doing most of the building, outside of the engineering construction, and they are actually fairly good in the industry. They intentionally provide a starting point to get into trades with pre-apprenticeship employment, which is huge in construction trades. Wages and benefits are on par with national averages for non-union labor.
The lowest paid people are "helpers" and they fuck up plenty when they try not to and aren't allowed to touch anything that could be of consequence. At most they could write a message on something nobody will see until the next renovation.

The "We don't have enough money" is because we don't have the military to pull a one turn military victory a la Civ so people starving is a sacrifice they're willing to make.
