I learned all about this during a ghost tour of Mystic, CT
If they had as a people properly united, do you think they could have fought back the great hunger of the Europeans?
Probably not, the Indigenous people in North America were dealing with a three pronged drive from Europe’s major superpowers of the time. Add to that the insane cost of life due to small pox and other diseases and the outlook is much worse.
If they had united, they may have been able to make a stand somewhere further in the west and held on to a portion of the land but I think the fate of the east coast was sealed very early once European migration to America began.
Also, presuming Native Americans to be "a people" (as in, homogeneous and unite-able) overlooks that they themselves frequently felt completely at odds with other, regional tribes & peoples. So, 'divide & conquer' usually wasn't necessary for the Euro invaders.
Also, in quite a few cases, some tribes would actually fight alongside various Euro factions against other Euros and other tribes.
