Today's game is Zomboid. We only had an hour today so we decided to make the best of it and have a Cookout in our little group of 3. We wanted to make Burgers, but we lacked the bread. So we decided "Maybe there's some fresh bread somewhere?" and we go searching. My two friends go off together to search the houses while i search the Strip Mall. I got lucky and found 3 buildings with Raw bread in it in a fridge. Of course though, the game had other plans.

While i was heading to the last building the Helicopter Came. I was lucky to have it distracted by my friends for a bit and had some planks in my car and bag from Barricading. So i got them out and boarded up all the doors and windows. To hunkerdown. Remember that part where i said i only had an hour to play? That's where it went. it was like when a show has a low budget episode too fund the bigger season finale. Like Breaking Bad's Fly episode i hear so much about. The entire time was spent in hear trying to keep from being seen by zombies and staying alive. To make matters worse had sliced my hand open on accident on one of the windows while boarding it up, so i had to take care of that.

I ripped some clothes off a zombie in the back and used that to bandage it, then I had to take care of my hunger. Luckily there was some non rotten cookies on the table i could eat. In the back i also managed to find some tea i could drink which helped. I used the time i was making the tea to also make the raw bread i had gathered, so i did manage to find the bread.

At around 4 PM the Helicopter finally fucked off and i was able to sneak out the front door of the Hair Salon next door mostly unseen. I did have to sneak around a bit because there was a ton of zombies covering the area, but i got home safe and with the bread delivered. Since my time was up though i had too save the cookout for next time.

I can't believe you've been doing this for over a year already.

What's the Helicopter? Bad guys?

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

It's a random event that spawns. I believe in lore it's scientists or reporters or something. The only effect really is that if you're outside the Helicopter follows you and all the noise calls Zombies to your location. I've seen a few mods that add different helicopter types though

The helicopter is a helicopter. After about a week, it arrives and if it spots you, it follows/observes you for nonspecific reasons.

The helicopter is also extremely loud, drawing zombies from a huge distance to you. The best way to deal with it is by being inside, so it doesn't spot you. Then it'll just fly around and not do much.

Ah okay. Thanks for the info.

it's a random event that happens sometime in the beginning of any new game — in story, it's a military black hawk helicopter flying over the Knox County area looking for survivors.

The effect in-game is that the zombies in the world all gather around to follow the noise source, which controls and drives a gigantic crowd of zombies around where you're at. It can be very overwhelming, especially when you're just starting out and don't have much by way of structures built.

Oh, the Project Zomboid has coop? Didn't know that. Is it friends-only or on some common server or what? Are the survival aspects (difficulty) adjustable?

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

It does! It has a lot of options too. You can do Splitscreen, or host just for friends, or hop on a server somebody else is making! If you're hosting the difficulty is also adjustable down to most major points

There are plenty of "private" servers that are technically open to anyone. Just follow the rules and enjoy the game.

You'll see a lot of "B42" or "build 42" being talked about. This is the most recent major update that is still in beta. It doesn't have multiplayer but does offer A LOT of new and improved features.

[–] Malix@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thank you for the info. But, nah, playing with random peeps not really my thing, me and my gaming circle basically just want friends-only.

So... if I'm parsing this right, the latest version doesn't do multiplayer, but earlier ones do? Or is this "B42" some beta-branch you need to manually select in steam->game properties?

[–] SomethingBlack@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

B42 is a beta branch like you say, you have to opt in to play it. The current version does do multiplayer, I'm currently running my own server for my friends on the current version

[–] Ozymandias88@feddit.uk 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's friends only where you can join the game a friend is running. (Also splitscreen if you're local). It's super customisable by the person who sets the game up. Pretty much everything is adjustable.

if you don't mind me asking for bit more details: how is death on single/multiplayer? Is it roguelitey-death-and-that's-it or is there respawning?

[–] miltsi@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Iirc if you die your character becomes a zombie that can be looted. You lose all skill progress and have to make a new character. The amount of loot retained from the zombie can be modified. I think there are mods that allow you to retain skill progression as well.

[–] Malix@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

Sounds cool. Thank you!

Gotta rummage through the available mods, but def considering picking this one up now.

[–] mitch@piefed.mitch.science 1 points 23 hours ago

my friends and I utilize a mod that records your skills in a notebook that stays on your zombie after you die. so you actually have a motivation to go back into somewhere dangerous and clean it up.

[–] mitch@piefed.mitch.science 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

still eagerly waiting for the stable release of the next version.

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

I'm excited for it. I played some of the Versions and they're awesome

[–] SomethingBlack@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fantastic game that gets so much deeper with every (infrequent) major update

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

I can't wait for Build 42 to get Multiplayer. No rush to the Devs but that's the main thing stopping me from fully making the jump

[–] SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works 1 points 22 hours ago

Hey is that Ultima Online?

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 4 points 1 day ago

I should do another run
