That was my thought the first time I walked into an arcade room and watched the first Virtua Fighter running on a big screen.

I was amazed when Rome Total War came out. 20 years later, the game looks like it was made on Windows Paint. At least Creative Assembly remastered the game.

To be fair, this is how everyone looked in the 90s.

I remember saying these exact words the first time I saw the original X-wing on the PC with VGA graphics.

For me it was Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.

In the case of Civilization it is true: modern Civs use cartoonish-caricatirish style, and this image is indeed more realistic.

Civ vacillates between realistic and cartoonish.

I don't think I ever had a point where I felt things reached a pinnacle. Photo-realistic was a goal, but nothing reached that. Some games looked good and I could be impressed with 3d, but that excitement was about how good they were getting, so anticipating what they would look like in the future

[–] REDACTED 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I still don't know a single photorealistic game except for some military simulators or flight simulator

[–] raef@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

No, still evolving. I'm sure if it ever got to some sci-fi, brain-jacked virtual reality, people would still be chasing elusive more realistic experiences

On a 14" CRT monitor? It looked fantastic! .... or maybe it was just the radiation I was feeling?

I was so poor, I could only get EGA. My rich friends had VGA. 256 colors. So many colors.

Some vga games still hold up

Every game is just an HD rerelease of Pong.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Hah! You made me realize that Adventure was fancy pong where you got to drive the ball.

I mean, that was literal in the case of anything on the 2600 or 7800.

This is what I love about looking back at the past. We always thought it can’t get better then it did.
Even Crysis, which was the pinnacle of graphics at one point, looks really outdated nowadays.
