Comic Books

A place to discuss comic books of all types, from old to new, Big 2 to indie, and everything in between.

Floppies, graphic novels, compilations, omnibusses (omnibusi?) are all fair game.

There is only one rule:*

Comic Books is a no judgement zone.

You can talk all you want about how Rob Liefeld is trash, Bob Kane is an asshole, or Frank Miller and Dave Sim’s politics have made them toxic, that’s all good.

If, however, another user is LEGITIMATELY a fan of something you don’t like, that does NOT make them a lesser person. Attack the art for being bad, not the person for being a fan of bad art.

* I lied. There are TWO rules... No piracy. Cover shots? That's good. Interior pages, in moderation? Sure. Full books? Links to pirate sites? That's how we get things shut down. :(

I'm not saying it's been a problem, because it hasn't been.

The story follows Grant McKay, a renegade scientist who, along with his team and family, embarks on a dangerous journey through various dimensions of the "Eververse" using his creation, "the Pillar". Unfortunately, the Pillar is sabotaged, trapping the team as they randomly jump through increasingly perilous and hostile dimensions.

I have all of these and liked the story & art.

I actually read this monthly as it was coming out! There’s a lot that I liked - the art is gorgeous, the world building, and it does a great job of introducing neat ideas or antagonists that come back around later in interesting ways.

Spoilery thoughtsI did not care much for the final volume. For one, it completely sucks the air out of the sails by doing a big jump from the cliffhanger of the previous volume. But more importantly it’s just bleak as hell. The ending was so nihilistic it made me question the whole series.

And then there’s Grant McKay. He starts the series as a piece of shit, and also ends the series as a piece of shit. Rather than rehabilitating his character through actions and repentance, the book instead chooses to give him a list of get-out-of-jail-free cards (had a terrible mom, Rebecca was actually using him in the affair so turns out he was the victim all along). That never sat particularly well with me either.

All in all I enjoyed the ride a heck of a lot and wanted to like the story but found myself frustrated by certain elements near the finale. I think I could still cautiously recommend it to folks who love sci-fi and parallel dimensions given a heaping grain of salt that it is a fun if imperfect series.

My first thought as well. Showing our age...

I got like 3 issues in a humble comic bundle a few years ago, but that’s all you get! So I just the other week picked up the compendium.

I was reading it for a while years ago. Is it still ongoing?

Just checked my... um... sources, and it looks like the last issue was #43, published in 2019 - so I'd say no. Dunno if it's a proper ending because I don't wanna peek & ruin it for myself if I should find this interesting.

Checked for myself too and it looks like #42 is indeed an ending. So I guess I'll pick up the last 7 issues I'm missing from my collection and read the whole thing.
