Foreigners won't travel for tourism when they face imprisonment for traveling here? Who would have thunk?

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 46 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Stay out of the USA. Non zero risk of being detained at the border on flimsy pretext.

They are threatening to violently annex Canada. They have lost my travel business indefinitely.

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 23 points 3 days ago

As an American, I don't blame you one bit. Please deny my country your tourism dollars. Our populace needs to feel a lot of pain before our cultists abandon this regeime.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"indefinitely"

There may come a time when our peoples can heal and healthy relations can resume. It won't be in my lifetime.

If by a miracle the fascists are all gone and the Dems sweep the house, the senate and the supreme court and the guilty are finally punished and ICE agents jailed in their own prison camps, I still won't won't work, play or purchase American.

I can't forgive the US where so many wanted this, willingly and knowingly. They were warned. They knew. When the ugly was in their face they cheered and asked for more. I can't support people like that. Ever.

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

I'm roughly in that place but I retain hope that positive change is possible.

[–] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 53 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Economic challenges are secondary.

You’re a challenged country. People don’t want to support you. Fuck you.

[–] socialsecurity@piefed.social 13 points 3 days ago

The Hospitality is not there anymore. The price, the service... No value. It was always fairly expensive but you can't shit on people and then charge them up the ass...

[–] Captainvaqina@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

I'm from the former USA and I agree with you.

I’m 42 and I live in northern Nevada born and raised. I’ve always traveled to Vegas regularly 2/3 times a year since I was a kid. And seeing what I consider my 2nd home town grow and change is wild at times. But since 2020 I’ve seen that Vegas has been on a slow decline and it’s been even more noticeable since this year. As an example I usually travel to Vegas in late April for my birthday and to see family and friends. I almost always stay at the same hotel but this time around I was told that 50% of the house keepers were to afraid to go to work due to ice raids and the other half had taken time off in protest of the current administration. So needless to say no clean towels for me. I can only see things getting worse as time goes on especially if Trump keeps wanting tariffs that will be a death blow to an entrainment town like Vegas. Wile yes Vegas is a hell hole and overpriced and it has lost its appeal with most people me included. The people of Vegas for the most are good hard working people and don’t deserve what is coming their way as just as it’s coming to hurt us all.

[–] mysticpickle@lemmy.ca 16 points 3 days ago

Well, 48% of Las Vegas voted for Trump so yeah. It's a very thin "most" I can empathize with.

[–] ThatGuy46475@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

It’s because we have balatro now so there’s no need to gamble anymore

Trump is trying to protect some industries with tariffs, not realizing that nationalism brings problems and people stay away, hurting tourism.

[–] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

fuck Las Vegas, it’s the Dubai of United States

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I'm new. What does that mean?

[–] mysticpickle@lemmy.ca 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Means it's a cultureless shit hole with exactly one thing going for it.

And the very definition of unsustainable, thus doomed to be rubble that the desert like conditions will bury and preserve, thus creating the great finds of Archeologists in future millenia assuming humans survive long enough to still have Archeologists. Like the next Egypt.

That the tourisme sector in the USA is having a really bad year with an option to many more bad years.

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago (3 children)

People on the vegas reddit talk about $30 drinks, $20+ burgers, $25 parking fees even if they are staying there, $50+ "resort fees" on top of over priced rooms, etc.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 21 points 3 days ago

Also, last I checked it's in America. International tourism was a big part of the economy there. US is kind of a dumb place to visit for international travelers right now.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

Reddit? Ew!

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah Vegas price gouges bad, if you can it's generally better to stay in the satellite towns and cities like Primm, Boulder, fuck even some weirdos like Jean or Searchlight.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My name pulls from Fallout 1, so still kinda but more SoCal.

[–] wildncrazyguy138@fedia.io 19 points 3 days ago

Oh look, if it’s not the consequences of my own actions. Rest assured they’ll do it again next time too, because the GOP has now sufficiently bribed them.

[–] Iampossiblyatwork@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I haven't seen much news on this but it's pretty bad going by the numbers.

[–] me66@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And by bad, you mean good, I presume?

[–] Iampossiblyatwork@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Bad in the sense that regular ass people will be fucked over the most by shit like this.

[–] breecher@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

Regular ass people have always been fucked over by going to Vegas. That is the idea which the city was founded on. It seems people have finally become partially aware of that fact.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

So...the American way?

[–] PumpkinEscobar@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

There are some good videos by Vegas locals talking about how ridiculous the resort fees and restaurant fees on the strip have become.

I’ve been to Vegas a bunch of times. It’s a fun place to lose some money, but it’s all slot machines with worse payouts and tons of resort fees now.

[–] MyOpinion@lemmy.today 12 points 3 days ago

Good to see MAGAts lose money.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

So then where are the $35/night rooms? Everything on the strip is $120+ still. Prices are literally higher than the busy season. I don't get it.

[–] PMmeTrebuchets@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I went last year and won't be going back. When I went in 2018 it was NOWHERE near as expensive (still expensive but we paid like $35 or something for a jack and coke at the poolside bar in 2024 at the flamingo ....) they have priced themselves too high for your average person to go and visit.

It's this + the ICE shit and it not being safe to come here anymore that have fucked Vegas.

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

I live 6 hours from Vegas and I’ve gotten 3 cold calls within 30 days offering me a gigantic discount to stay in Vegas. While it’s tempting, I definitely wouldn’t choose Vegas over something like Santa Monica or San Diego unless there was free food involved.
