This proof is a banger, but I have a proof that the eqation x^n^ + y^n^ = z^n^ has no integer solutions for n > 2 on my buttocks

Unfortunately I can't share it with you, as there might be british people on this website.

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 58 points 1 week ago (6 children)

Actually, currently all the Lemmy instances are blocking the UK because of the new porn law. So you are safe.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 41 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Oh, you mean... there are currently more Argentines than british on lemmy? Escucharon muchachos? Ganamos*

[–] HowAbt2day@futurology.today 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] IcyToes@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 week ago

You're wrong.

Source: British not using VPN... Well, not for Lemmy, anyhow.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago

Oh, that's hilarious.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Does that mean reddit.uk is gone now?

(It's also why I thought "buy European" being hosted there was dumb, especially post Brexit)

Formatting is wild there my dawg. Fermat's sufficiently recognisable tho' that I know what it meant to say

The proof is actually pretty simple but the character limit on my instance is too small to contain it

Me to the tattoo artist: "show your work"

[–] socsa@piefed.social 44 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I mean you do you but the most famous undergrad level proof might not be the flex you imagine it to be.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 31 points 1 week ago (2 children)

and basic algebra is a bigger flex?

[–] socsa@piefed.social 43 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I suppose if you really pressed me on it I'd say Pythagorean theorem is maybe less tryhard due to its innocence. It's like the Casio watch of basic maths. Euler's identity is like the cheapest Omega. You're kind of hoping the observer recognizes the brand is expensive, but doesn't know more than that.

[–] teft@piefed.social 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You better define all those symbols in the same tattoo

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I wonder if it’s a pun or joke. Like her back is C. Idk what else to make to it.

Yeah, at least do the fundamental theorem of algebra, or Stokes' theorem.

[–] kogasa@programming.dev 5 points 1 week ago

Stokes' theorem tattoo would go hard

[–] Hasherm0n@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago (3 children)

For anyone else that needs the reminder, the one on the right is Euler's formula.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler%27s_formula

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 46 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It’s amazing how much a visualization can help to explain

Like I had to take a few higher level math classes in college since I majored in comp sci, and the difference between a professor just writing notation on a board and rambling for an hour vs a professor explaining application and using visuals to explain was such a wild difference in the quality of classes

[–] rothaine@lemmy.zip 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Meanwhile Euler was coming up with all this shit while being blind

[–] deepus@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Euler: What is one banana and why does Tom have seven?

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

More specifically, the power series proof of Euler's identity.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh sweet! That's the magic that makes rotations work intuitively in Blender and game engines! :D

... Still can't say I understand it but I sure am grateful!

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I thought the magic that makes rotations work intuitively in games was quaternions.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Wait, you're totally right! I had it turned around!

Quaternions avoid the gimbal lock issue, and are more efficient overall, but they're a bit more complicated to understand.

Euler is more user-friendly on the editing side of things, and easier to understand, but it's got some shortcomings. (Maybe that's why I thought this, perhaps some tutorials were telling me to use Euler at first...? Hm.)

Both are an option in Blender and Godot for instance, because one might suit a given situation better than the other.

[–] BreakerSwitch@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Listen, Pythagoras gives us the hands down best way to tell intelligent life visiting earth that we're intelligent. Drawing a right triangle and marking the sides with 3 dots, 4 dots, and 5 dots immediately demonstrates that we are a sapient species that has developed mathematics with no need for a device or language. Of course, we're all carrying devices these days, so maybe that's no longer relevant.

[–] EvacuateSoul@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The romantic fantasy novel?

[–] RupeThereItIs@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If we ever do met intelligent alien life, there's no guarantee such a thing will make any sense to them.

I mean, for one, they may not have eyes to see your drawing among a million other likely faulty assumptions in your scenario.

[–] Uli@sopuli.xyz 19 points 1 week ago

But if they evolved to be right triangles with their sides marked by three dots, four dots, and five dots, then the message will be spot on.

[–] fishos@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

If they can't "see", then how would they ever travel intergalacticly? Seriously, they've have some form of sight sense, even if it's braille.

And the point is that math is indeed universal. The ratio of a triangle will never change. And again, if you're a space fairing civilization, you'd have figured out triangles. You're confusing differences in culture with basic rules of the universe. It'd be like saying "what if they don't know what gravity is?" like they just somehow float around because they're ignorant of the laws of gravity.

Girl on the right has the kind of ink I'm actually a little shocked nobody I've slept with has had. Though my ex wanted Euler's formula as a tattoo.

[–] CluckN@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago

They both pale in comparison to the Grover’s Algorithm tramp stamp that your mom has.

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Pythagoras is at least something I regularly use in day to day life.

I'mma be honest with you guys, I don't get either. And none of the maths either.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Left is the Pythagorean equation. Pretty simple, basic equation that's easy to use and apply.

Right is an elegant mathematical proof, so a little more "attractive" if you like maths I suppose. 😄

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Left is basic algebra/geometry that allows anyone to find a basic square angle. It's used daily in construction. You can learn how to use it today by searching "345 triangle"

Super useful for anyone, even meatheads like me.

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Pythagorean theorem

[–] DrDystopia@lemy.lol 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

find a basic square angle

I still don't get it, doesn't a square have four 90 degree angles? I'm probably misunderstanding, I've never done any sort of calculations in English ever. I'll Google.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The sum of the squares of the two short sides of a right triangle is equal to the square of the long side. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagorean_theorem

Oh, sorry. I meant making a square angle on a surface. Super important in construction

Can't make an actual square if you don't start "square". Might be different in your language

e: also called a"right angle" in English l

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just direct them to the "Pythagorean equation"?

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Already said I'm a meathead

I just got off a 10 hour shift pulling gross floor out of a surgery recovery. Give me a break.

[–] DrDystopia@lemy.lol 7 points 1 week ago

Give you a break? You deserve the entire evening and even night off of work!

I think that is LaTeX on her arm. How sexy.

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 10 points 1 week ago

No it's not. latex is the source code

Is the girl on the left the actress who plays the actress who pretends to be dead in House? This

edit: actually I can't find that pic anywhere else online so I'm guessing the person isn't real. oh well
