Kinda creepy seeing them smile so hard given the WWI western front was as close to hell on earth as I pray we ever get to. I suppose they’re likely far enough off the LOC to be somewhat better off.

Yeah. Even the smell would start to unnerve you, just a strong smell of death in the air way before you got close enough to see or hear it. I agree, I think if they're smiling like that they're pretty far back from the front.

I figure there’s also a decent chance they were told to smile by the photographer for propaganda purposes, although their smiles aren’t looking particularly forced.
