Also just a note. It’s better to silence the ringer than immediately reject. Some spam systems will register the reject since it doesn’t ring the full 4 times and it’ll mark the number as active. (Even worse sometimes they’ll start calling back to back from different numbers).

Silencing it lets it ring out the full 4 times and they don’t know if the number still has a person on the other side. Also just using the default VM prompt rather than a custom one will help reduce the numbers.

This is why I always hit volume down instead of the hang up button to reject a call.

Anecdotally as well if you have a personalized voicemail they seem to call more. I made mine go back to the default “You have reached 9…” and I went from 5-7 spam calls a day to 2-4.

On iPhone, hitting the lock button will let the call ring out and go to voice mail.

I know everyone hates spam calls, but if you've ordered a pizza (or a food delivery of any kind) you haven't received yet, answer your goddamn phone. Drivers have other deliveries to make and don't have time for your paranoid ass.

if it's important they'll leave a voice message.

"Silence unknown callers"

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Answer phone, immediately hit mute, put phone down until they hang up.

I used to do this just to waste their time. If they spend ten seconds trying to talk to a human on the other end of the line, that;s ten seconds they are not annoying someone else. Then I noticed that I was getting a lot fewer spam calls than my wife. I am beginning to think that the auto-dialers are thinking that my number is being machine answered or something like that and they flag it in their system as a number not worth calling.

This is not a good idea.

Spam calls are, by and large, automated. When the number does not answer several times in a row, the number is often auto deleted from the list so as to get more scams done.

When you answer, it confirms for the automated program making the calls that your number is still in service and is answered.

Odd. My wife and daughter never answer them and they get them every day. I get one maybe every couple weeks.

[–] capuccino@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I used to do this, but I stop answer. Now I just wait to they hang up (I silence the phone using the lower volume button) and next I do block the number. If you answer or hang up, they'll continue calling you.

A part of my job is to call people whose addresses arent correct before dispatching deliveries or when the drivers arrive onsite and its not the right place.

If you're going to screen calls like this check your messages or make the choice not to scream at people when your shit gets sent back to the manufacturer and you get billed for the attempted delivery anyway.

I really hope the new season of King of the Hill lives up to the original. This show is fantastic.

They're going to have to address the murder of Jonathan Joss

You get notifications of incoming calls from unknown numbers?

Get SpamBlocker on Android. I don't know of anything for iOS.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

On iOS toggle the “Silence Unknown Callers” option in the phone settings. You will still get the emblem showing that somebody is actively leaving a voicemail that you can tap on. So you can see what they are saying and can still answer the call while they are leaving the message.

Samsung packages a service called Hiya that has an auto-block for unknown or hidden callers which I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT AFTER YEARS

Pretty sure similar functionality is built-in to iOS. I turned it on for my elderly mother's phone, and it completely stopped the scammers that were constantly calling her. I think it's built-in because I don't remember installing anything.

I know that there are Androids that ship natively with stuff like it, and ios stuff too, personally I use KnownCalls, which can just block everyone who isn't a contact.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 2 points 4 days ago

I use Truecaller on iOS, but silencing unknown numbers is just a setting. I use Truecaller for the AI assistant and screening calls.

Nice!

I used Blacklist for probably 10 years. Good to see some other apps out there.

Sometimes I answer, mute myself, and don't reply at all just to make them waste time
