Chicago has been excellent about this. If the people say a bike lane is needed, they will very likely put it in. The only issue that really gets in the way is the privatized parking meter issue. We really shot ourselves in the foot with that one. Still, I only ever see bike infrastructure get better in Chicago every day. There are even some streets that are being made permanent pedestrian only areas which I'm stoked about!

That's rare.

I've checked out dozens of sites where pedestrians or cyclists were killed by drivers. Municipalities pretty much never make those areas safe. Not even with paint lines.
