Why is this in c/upliftingnews ? Its rather depressing that we are unable to build safe neighbourhoods without having to kill eachother.

it is uplifting in the sense that it is changing for better. It this does not feel uplifting with this wording though. It is "brutally" honest. I am iffy on removing this one

I feel the same. It’s like reading “person struck down in their prime has park bench named after them”.

"Uplift" means to raise the level of; improve; cause one to feel optimism

Here a dangerous street has been improved by converting it into a neighborhood greenway. It is a well-known fact that there are already a lot of dangerous streets in the world, but I feel optimistic that more and more cities are rethinking the way they build their thoroughfares and are shifting to safer, more human-focused designs.

Haven't ridden a bike regularly since I was 21, so forgive my ignorance. If the street was that dangerous (see video in post), why didn't people ride the sidewalks?

I know, they shouldn't have to, I get that, but I've stuck to sidewalks when the road felt that sketchy. And yes, random stuff can come at you sideways from a sidewalk, yes that's dangerous, but not as dangerous as riding that street.

I'll probably get called a victim blamer, but it's an honest question. In any case, good work Chicago DOT!

Its illegal in Chicago to bike on the sidewalk.

Always thought that's bullshit. I will ride on a sidewalk before riding a bike on the street.

Lived there and did not know that! Thanks for the explanation!
