Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

your hands are the only hands you get so you better start installing Linux with them

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I have installed windows on so many systems it will take me decades to atone with enough linux installs

[–] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well, it depends on when.

90s windows inatalls aren't great, but they're excusable.

00s windows installs are a few points against you, depending on use case.

10s windows installs are... Oof.

20s windows installs, yeah, a special hell just for you.

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Mass scale enterprise windows 10 to 11 migration 🫤

They're building a 10th circle just for you.

Why are all sysadmins subs?

Is it because you just need to enjoy the suffering?

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think part of the appeal is not having to be the one in control? That's someone else's problem.

So you dont enjoy the suffering?

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

I use my feet, mostly as a utilitarian reason for having bought thigh high toe socks.

People who use "your body is a temple" as an argument against tattoos or body modifications have never seen a fucking temple in their lives.

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 28 points 5 days ago (1 children)

American Christian temples and churches are all boring and austere because having fun or enjoying anything is a sin. They are not representative of temples as a whole, but their constituents think they are (or else think they should be).

We're all living in Amerika, Amerika ist wunderbar

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

Decoration is sacred, and as such it is important to adorn your mortal home accordingly (ie, however it makes you happy).

Life is messy and beautiful. Imposing drabness onto others is an affront to nature.

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 days ago

Don't get a tattoo because it looks gross (to me at least). Unless looking bad is your thing, then, by all means get tattooed.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 28 points 4 days ago (2 children)

This is the only body you get. It will inevitably wear out. The worse you treat it the faster it will wear out.

Keep in shape. Eat right. Don't take stupid risks. Listen to your doctor. And modify it to your hearts desire, but analyze your desires.

Someday with fortune you will be old. I've spoken to a lot of old people. The things they say they regret aren't things like tattoos, piercings, or transitioning. They regret not doing those things more often. But they also regret eating poorly and not exercising. They regret the injuries that now cripple them. And they regret not enjoying their time.

[–] Tonava@sopuli.xyz 5 points 4 days ago

Also good to remember the only time you have is right now; get that tattoo or start hrt. Who knows if tomorrow ever comes

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Many regret divorce.

[–] Stillwater@sh.itjust.works 35 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I envy people with tattoos. I think when done weil they are cool and beautiful expressions. But I have never had anything I'm willing to have permanently etched on my body. I don't even like the same things I liked last year.

[–] tmyakal 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

So don't get tattoos of things you like. There's plenty of reasons to get tattoos beyond just "beautiful expression."

I know a guy who got his wife's phone number tattooed on his foot, just in case he ever doesn't have his phone on him.

My brother got "Ouch" on the inside of his lip because it was funny.

My wife has multiple tattoos of bullshit flash because the artist offered to do them for free and she likes the way getting a tattoo feels.

If you want a tattoo, just get a tattoo. If you truly end up hating it down the road, plenty of artists specialize in cover-ups.

[–] Stillwater@sh.itjust.works 17 points 5 days ago (3 children)

It's hard for me to make those rash decisions, I'm so indecisive 😩

[–] webadict@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Then get a picture of a tattoo, and whenever you ask someone if they want to see your tattoo, just show them that picture. Way less commitment.

Can confirm. Getting the tattoo is the easy part. Deciding what to get really blows.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

get an inkblot, so you can see it as whatever you’re in the mood to see it as

Do Estrogen recreationally!

[–] murvel@feddit.nu 3 points 3 days ago

Lose some fuking weight, get healthy!

[–] uranibaba@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

This is stupid. "This is the only body you get" is a good point. The point is to think twice, not to not do it.

[–] EpeeGnome@feddit.online 22 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

This reminds me. Some years ago I was driving down the highway and I found myself behind the most garishly styled car I've seen in my life. I don't recall the exact details now, just that I found it so brightly over decorated that it hurt to look at. "Who would put all that effort into making their vehicle so hideous?" I thought. Then there was a slowdown and everyone had to hit their brakes. Their brake lights, I now saw, were partially masked to say "YOLO!" every time they hit the brakes. "Well, fair enough," I realized. I still hated it, but I had to respect that the car made them happy. You only have one life to live, and if you want to spend part it driving the most ugly car ever bedazzled, well, you do you. I'm happy for you. They'll never know it, but that moment really stuck with me ever since. Don't let others' judgment stop you from doing to your car, or your body, what brings you the most joy.

Well, unless it's a safety hazard to others. Please don't do car mods that risk harm to others.

[–] Linkalee@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

I was gonna say that this post reminded me of how YOLO can be interpreted as two polar opposite meanings. You only live once, so you should do all the crazy things you want to do because you won't get a second chance. But also, you only live once, so you should be careful with the one life you're given and not do something to screw it up or end it early.

If it came on with the brake lights on a hideously ugly car, then it could be argued that they meant both meanings at the same time. Interesting.

[–] edg@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

A friend suggested to me that I get over this mindset by getting a tattoo. Instead, I've just been talking way too much about getting a tattoo.

[–] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Can never find an artist i like that does the thing i want.

HRT is permanent but so is the passage of time.

[–] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Not doing hrt also permenant.

Which woild you rather live with?

[–] hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is this a rhetorical question?

[–] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Nope! Your body's do'in stuff, with or without your intent.

You are on sexed hormones. Whichever side of your skin they come from. They are doing their thing. It is permenant.

Inaction is not a real thing when you exist in so much fucking context; only ceding your turn to forces in motion.

Not always a bad thing. Maybe they're doing what you need them to and you just want to float down the river.

[–] hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

...

that's what I said but with many more words.

I think anyone who needed to hear it would have used the ambiguity to not do so.

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 7 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I don't think it is. One can just stop the hormones.

As for the impacts of those hormones...
https://www.plannedparenthood.org/planned-parenthood-central-western-new-york/patient-resources/our-services/gender-affirming-care/effects-of-estrogen-based-hormone-therapy
Breast growth in permanent, testicle and "Decreased Sperm Production/ Reduced Fertility" shrinkage might be permanent.

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 11 points 4 days ago

As an aside, and the reason this is separate:

"Cessation of Male Pattern Balding" is an impact of estrogen HRT. So do with that information what you will.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

True, the effects of not taking the hormones will also continue.

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Damn! Here I am not taking hormones and balding.

[–] hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 4 days ago

Yes I know they gave me the packet.

[–] latenightnoir@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 5 days ago
