updated as of yesterday (July 21): based on a statistical model developed by a prestigious medical journal called The Lancet, Israel has killed roughly 434,800 people in Gaza since the country’s military started to attack the territory on 8 October 2023. That’s 20.7% of Gaza’s entire pre-conflict population dead. Over half are women and children.

Israel knows exactly what it's doing to Palestinians, but it clearly has no idea what it's doing to itself.

Or maybe some do and that's what they want?

If you mean some Israelis want the world to collectively view them as a genocidal state of racists and murderers (or at least racist and murderer apologists), I mean, sure, perhaps some do, but I can't fathom why they would, and I don't think that's particularly common given how widespread their propaganda campaigns go to push the narrative that they're the good guys.

They are just defending themselves /s

I think if I ever hear someone say that unironically in real life, I'm going to smack them.

Smack them in self-defense, of course

I'm so sick of this "women and children" reporting. A death is a death, and as an antinatalist, seems like having kids in such a situation wasn't the best of ideas.

Most of the men being killed aren't Hamas, yet we're treating their deaths as lesser than others'? This isn't borne of sexism but rather being tired of the heartstrings propaganda.

As much as I agree with you, I think the purpose of the 'women and children' stats is more to avoid malicious attempts to derail the conversation by distracting with questions of "how many of them were Hamas tho", "how do you know they weren't Hamas", etc.

You always know you're on the right side of history when demanding others disprove a negative.

Adding to what the other person said, when reporting on Palestine until like a year ago (and for certain parts of the political spectrum even now) it was essential to avoid making any statements that have holes, real or imagined, for Zionists to exploit. That's why the official casualty count is an underestimate, and why the number of women and children is stressed so much. Israel used to (and sometimes still does) always get the benefit of the doubt, so making sure the facts being presented are ironclad has/had to take precedence over covering the full extent of the madness.
