As an ancient Quake 3 player, it makes me happy to see that Xonotic seems like a really great and even open source adaption of this type of fast-paced arena shooter game. Looks much better than I would have expected. Also, at least Kyle and Spike seemed really high skilled (at least as far as I can guess based on zero game knowledge), comparable to the best Q3/QL/QC players I've seen. Didn't watch everything though, just skimmed through it.

Yeah one of the reasons I like to post and comment about Xonotic is that I think it is a genuinely really underrated game especially when singleplayer movement shooters have exploded in popularity and yet barely any multiplayer PVP games have tapped into that same feel. Xonotic is the perfect game for this moment in this golden era of "boomer shooter"/movement-shooter/Dusk-like/Turbo Overkill-like games.
Side note, the Xonotic project is a years old fork of Nexuiz which a lot of people seem to have heard of from back in the day when that project was active in development.
Not only is Xonotic fascinating from the perspective of Quake/darkplaces engine development and community FPS game development history in general it is just a genuinely good game that addresses what I as a player who tried out Quake Live without any background in Quake found lacking about Quake... i.e. the weapons just aren't that fun.
I love Quake 3 Arena style gameplay, and the weapons are obviously a deep part of the whole game coming together so beautifully in multiplayer but Xonotic just has so much more fun with its weapons. The rocketlauncher with its guided flight ability, the crylink with its weird shotgun/reverse shotgun spread mechanic, the blaster as a default weapon given so you can always rocket jump... Xonotic combines the fun of Unreal Tournament weapons with the almost spiritually locked in flow to Quake style movement shooters.
Also yes... watching the best players in the world at Xonotic are very intimidating to watch. Players like Kyle, Rainbow Shadow, Dodger etc. are so ruthlessly fast it is hard to comprehend but it is a blast to watch.
