/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Not “most likely”. He can definitely see through the cards since he mentions it to Worf in an episode. He only does it after the hand is played but even that could be considered cheating since he might be able to tell what your bluffs look like.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 76 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

If Geordi can see through the cards, then he can also see through their clothes..

Just sayin'

[–] grue@lemmy.world 42 points 1 week ago

Pretty sure he can see through their skin.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I'm... fairly certain he couldn't make out the details.

[–] teft@piefed.social 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

JWST can swap which wavelengths they are looking at. You're telling me Geordi can't?

He probably just has to hit a button and it goes to ir or x-ray or EHF.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

In one episode he claimed that he got all the wavelengths at once, compressed through the visor so that his brain could handle it, and that he had to just focus really hard to filter out extraneous ones. He compared it to trying to follow a single conversation in a noisy room (think a bar or club or something). So I guess maybe he could have spent a bunch of time as a teen focusing on that specific wavelength?

I like to think the mini menu in the lower center is a mid 2ks share bar for Myspace, Tumblr, Twitter, etc.

Oh that's definitely cheating

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 51 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Geordi can't cheat, because he's always single.

The man takes risks on the reg, just to feel something.

Every fucking time he ends up as (temp) captain it's some huge gamble

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

When he ends up commanding the ENT-D he always ends up losing control of the ship

[–] flop_leash_973@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No one loses control of the D like Riker.

Are you implying that they are letting him win?!

[–] Samskara@sh.itjust.works 84 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He’s the boss. Of course they let him win.

You shut your mouth.

More evidence of how goody-two-shoes the crew is, they never cheat. These are people who would die to not kill someone who is trying to murder them. Intentional and great world building.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 31 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Geordi outright told them he looks at the cards, but only after the hand is over. I would still argue that counts as cheating since it lets him get a better idea for when the others are bluffing.

[–] misteloct@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago

Perhaps, though if he admitted it to the crew and they're ok with it, it's not necessarily in the spirit of cheating.

[–] mineralfellow@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

He did one game, but advised Worf to get cards that are opaque.

Data should pretty much never lose though. Someone over at reddit Daystrum Institute has done several write ups of why the poker doesn't make any sense most of the times we see it

https://old.reddit.com/r/DaystromInstitute/comments/8zs1pr/analyzing_the_worstplayed_hand_of_poker_that_we/

[–] misteloct@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago

Brilliant analysis. I do agree with one of the replies saying the game is less about winning and more about a fun social experience (except Word who is taking it seriously).

If only we could agree such ideals make us stronger as a species, least be honest with each other... And hopefully others if we get to meet them.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Data also has the ultimate poker face.

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

He does realize that his tell is literally just his willingness to play a hand. If Data doesn't fold, you should.

[–] jqubed@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Is Data playing, though, or just dealing?

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Is he dealing or is he just coping?

[–] qjkxbmwvz@startrek.website 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is he coping or just surviving?

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Is he just surviving or eye-of-the-tigering?

[–] Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago

Is he eye of the tigering or subconsciously stacking the deck to pass a message to himself in future iterations of a temporal causality loop?

data is usually also playing, theres a whole episode where he finds out what bluffing is

[–] karmiclychee@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago

The best player unless Crusher is at the table.

[–] thatsTheCatch@lemmy.nz 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

You don't count cards in poker. That's blackjack

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 20 points 1 week ago (3 children)

With his hands and then every card revealed he can in fact count the cards and calculate the probability. As well as profile every players past games and day to day life.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

It doesn't require counting cards, as he there isn't any long term play (blackjack uses the same initial decks for multiple rounds).

But you're right that he could calculate probabilities of each person having other hands. However, the thing with poker is that it's about bluffing and choosing when/when not to take risks. He could build profiles for each person, but that assumes a consistent plan/strategy.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Keeping track of the odds with a single deck doesn't take a positronic brain. Anyone could do it with some practice.

But he could analyze the shuffle in real time and know the order of the cards.

The Screencap almost made me think this was an early 90s game.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I hear he also makes a mean omelet.
