Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

It's ok, Trump and his fascist bootlickers have declared that climate change didn't exist. Surely that means that insurance companies won't raise prices.

Surely that means that insurance companies won’t raise prices.

That's crazy logic even for a Trumpologist. Companies always raise prices. Oil goes up? Raise the prices! Oil goes down? Raise the prices. Oil price stagnation? Raise the prices!

[–] MapleEngineer@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Sure, but if climate change isn't real then there is no reason to raise prices because of climate change. Trump declared it.

[–] Lembot_0004@discuss.online 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

then there is no reason to raise prices because of climate change

Trump: Yes, but there are many other reasons: communism, China, antisemitism, inflation and gays.

[–] MapleEngineer@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Darned gays.

Are they causing climate change?

[–] Lembot_0004@discuss.online 1 points 3 weeks ago

Trump: I told you already that there is no climate change, you covfefed koshbotjh dumb dhjdsfhjhf!!!

This just in, 13% of surveyed Californians don't understand how home insurance works.

Is California the only sane place left in the US? I feel that every time I read something slightly positive its always California.

Washington and New York occasionally do good.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

No. We have a system which gives more power to less populated areas. Plenty of fairly reasonable people still; just don't have power except in a few areas

Not concerned about climate change, but the raising costs. I guess they are still american after all.

NYC might have a moderate socialist dem candidate for mayoral election this year. He crushed it in the primary. Even my straight male ass has a boner for him at this stage. And I don't even get to vote, I'm not American, nor do I live there lol

What about the other 13%. Are they not concerned or do they not think it will rise?

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

They are homeless.

Not too concerned (7%) and Not at all concerned (5%) and I guess 1% to rounding error.

Can’t forget the 4% lizard man constant.

[–] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Aww that's cute, they think the insurance companies will offer insurance at all.

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

Not concerned enough to ensure they encourage and engage in near zero emissons (2-3t per person per annum) though.

What thwy are trying to figure out is how to ensure government subsidies them and kicks the can down the road until it all collapses.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

And none of those people actually know anything about the topic except that they're worried. Useless poll.

The huge price tags the climate disasters keep racking up are going to make large swathes of the country uninsurable. CA is just leading the pack because things are more expensive overall there.

[–] Asswardbackaddict@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

*87% of Californians point to climate change as a reasonable justification for their own extortion.
