I wonder what the goal here is. Why would a private group be worried about the strength of phone encryption? Seems suspicious.

Pretty good article (minus the "authoritarian governments" lines which seem to imply that billionaires trying to reduce encryption on behalf of the government isn't authoritarian). People should read the whole thing. Even has a paragraph mentioning Ashton Kutcher being tangentially related (lol).

Following the campaign’s debut, former Georgia Bureau of Investigations Special Agent in Charge Debbie Garner, who has also previously worked for iPhone-hacking tech firm Grayshift, hailed the Heat Initiative’s launch in a LinkedIn group for Homeland Security alumni, encouraging them to learn more.
