Drew Hutton using right-wing talking points. What a surprise.

The deadlock broke open in March 2025 when Hutton spoke to the Saturday Paper and later to the Guardian in July. In the interim, Hutton began increasingly sharing articles and opinions on Facebook that criticised what he called “trans extremists”.

The Saturday Paper? Did you miss the memo about BDS Drew?

Hutton said he believed his expulsion signaled “a crisis point” for the Greens, who have seen their political gains erode in Queensland in recent state and federal elections.

“People are starting to see the Greens as weird and unlikable,’ Hutton said.

Talk about burning bridges! Adios Drew!

Absolutely spot on 🤣

Talk about burning bridges! Adios Drew!

In the historic shift to the left at the last election the greens didn't gain much and lost a bunch of seats, you waving off one of the most strongest greens members of all time who still has support of both the Greens’ first and second national leaders, Bob Brown and Christine Milne makes me think that maybe the greens members haven't learned much?

In the historic shift to the left at the last election

It wasn't a shift to the left. The Coalition abandoned the centre, allowing Labor to win by default as the only centrist major party.

the greens didn’t gain much and lost a bunch of seats

The nationwide first preference vote swing against The Greens was -0.05%. This idea that they suffered from some massive voter backlash for being "too woke" is a total myth.

Oh is that what it was? In France and Germany voters are swinging to the right hard and there's good reasons to do so here as well (see: queensland most recent election) but no, instead it's just Labor winning by default, good to see green cope in full force

The nationwide first preference vote swing against The Greens was -0.05%.

Yes as I said, a full swing to the left and the greens LOST votes, that's incredible, I would hardly expect them to increase their votes in droves if there was a swing to the right and the liberal party won

This idea that they suffered from some massive voter backlash for being “too woke” is a total myth.

They lost their leader, they lost all the seats in brisbane greenslide, they have stalled politically and they're very lucky they're one of the few recognisable left wing parties in the senate, I'm still waiting to see the teals expand out, could be eating the greens for lunch next time

In France and Germany

We live in Australia.

The Greens will be fine. I'm not a member by the way.

sorry i shouldn’t have assumed your voting preferences, i assume the greens are already banning me now :(

Sorry, I don't know why anyone is downvoting you. Nobody should be downvoted for having a shit sense of humour.

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 1 points 1 week ago

I don't care about downvotes, if I did I wouldn't be here

Thank you so much for posting this, I haven't laughed this hard since watching shane gillis the other day

Hutton refused to comply, citing free speech – an issue for which he had once chained himself to a tree in Queens Street Mall and for which he had been thrown into jail by Bjelke-Petersen’s corrupt police force many times as part of a broader civil disobedience campaign which was, eventually, successful in the form of the landmark 1992 Peaceful Assembly Act.

Damn, what a legend

Hutton says his is not an isolated case, and claims he knows of more than 40 people who have been expelled or “forced out” of the Greens after voicing their position on gender.

“Almost all of them are women,” Hutton says. “They’re second-wave feminists, for the most part. Some of them are lesbians. And they are outraged.

🤣 the greens somehow turning lesbians to the right!

It's pretty clear we're desperate for another left wing party, maybe one that focused on the environment

Free speech is an American concept, in Australia inciting hate against minorities is not considered a thing that should be allowed and rightly so. That said we (like America) need to do more on defamation laws so it's not the rich people enforcing speech restrictions.

That said, specifically Drew Hutton wasn't even accused of transphobia. The issue was that him criticizing the Greens for their decision to expel a transphobic member "provided a platform for others to demean trans women" which is ... I think we can all agree unreasonable. That was only a suspension though. The specific "criticism of trans extremism" that later got him booted from the party entirely isn't entirely specified.

"People are starting to see the Greens as weird and unlikable"

Hence why I am keen to give Drew Hutton the benefit of the doubt here.

I just don't think this is true. Drew is being snarky after going in to bat for TERFs and losing. That's all.
