Saved you a click: it was due to the chemical treatment applied to the wood. The exact formula is not yet known, further research is needed.

strads are an icon, not an instrument.

even if we managed to 100% recreate the process, and make violins which no one could tell the difference, Stads would still be as valuable.

Depends who you are. To a musician, an obtainable instrument that sounds as good and has none of the maintenance challenges of an antique would be very valuable.

yhea, no doubt.

but even if we made a new superstrad, the originals are unreplecable relics, and a concert with a strad will be considered superior to one with a violin that might sound even better.
