Possible reasons why this happens:

  • An update was recently released that changed the game for the worse, causing long-time players to change their review.
  • It's an early access title that's been abandoned by the developer, and is being justifiably review bombed as a result.
  • It was recently included in a bundle, so there's a lot of new players who weren't interested enough to buy the game on its own, but played it after receiving it in the bundle and were unimpressed. I'd give this one the least weight, because often times those are players who just don't like the genre or went in with too-high expectations for a low budget game.

You forgot

An update was recently released that didnt change the game in a way some long-term players wanted, and they're angry they fell for hype from streamers and are taking it out on the devs instead.

Or, as we recently saw in helldivers

An update was recently released with a bad translation, and gave players an expectation they could do something that they couldn't, and it became politicized

[–] CH3DD4R_G0BL1N@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 weeks ago

You both forgot

An update proposal was recently released that didnt change the game

Like we just saw with Darktide. Some proposed balance changes for 2 of the most overpowered outlier weapons were accidentally leaked in the Chinese version of patch notes and they ignited a review bomb by that player base that made its way to others once translated.

This took the game from a recently clawed back mostly positive back to mixed.

The game is in an even worse balance state now that Arbites has released, but this reaction to the proposal of change was one of the most outlandish things I’ve seen in my gaming life. It will almost certainly affect Fatsharks already timid stance on proper game balance.

HD2 unwarranted outcries at least always come from something actually happening to the game. This was just an idea of a possible change.

In the case of Oblivion Remastered (not the proper one, the Bethesda one) it seems closer to #2. It has very similar reviews to this screenshot. A lot of people were excited and happy to play it, but as time went on people found that the game was actually moderately bugged and has many progress breaking issues that the devs ignore. I'm assuming that Bethesda released this purely to undermine Skyblivion, but it's clear which dev team cares about what they produce. Side note, the absolute scumbags charge £50 for it. A remaster should never be above £20

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 31 points 2 weeks ago

I really don't know what people expected with oblivion remastered tbh, its a Bethesda title of course it's broken

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Side note, the absolute scumbags charge £50

I was downvoted for pointing this out.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yo ho, me hearties. You own it already. "Update" your copy to its current iteration for free. 🤌🏼

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I can understand they want some more money but since I already own the game, it is a graphic improving DLC. Should be £10-£15 max.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

Meh. It's a remaster. Mostly automated, anyhow. Charging for that barely-half-assed re-re-re-release isn't just greedy AF, it's a slap in our peasant faces with global cost-of-living in the fuckin' stratosphere. You owe it to yourself to spend your finite cash more wisely. These fucks don't need it, and none of the original devs get a cent of it now, anyhow.

[–] Minnels@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

But the update is so much more work than a horse armor dlc which is a lot of money for no content.

[–] Lyra_Lycan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

It's a no brainer, it's a remaster so no new designing, no new story or landscape, just polishing what was expertly crafted many years ago. The problem with the high-end gaming industry is that the publishers and corporate devs take more and more liberties for their benefit, harming others in the process such as:

  • Constant patch updates after an unfinished release instead of releasing a game in its entirety;
  • Crunch culture on employees to get a publisher deadline that probably really doesn't matter more than the mental and physical wellbeing of the team;
  • Selling licenses to access mandatory online features of games, without which the game is rendered broken instead of perfectly playable, for example a leaderboard that just stops working and doesn't affect gameplay in any way.

It seems they're now trying to pass old refreshed games off at full price to capitalmaxx off a new generation, as well as nostalgic returnees.

[–] Tempus_Fugit@midwest.social 6 points 2 weeks ago

Did that happen? I bought Oblivion Remastered on release day and had minimal problems with it, it's a Bethesda game so some are to be expected. I've run through it twice now and have had a blast.

[–] bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

the game was actually moderately bugged

Does that mean Bethesda actually fixed 95% of their release bugs?

[–] Hugin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

No it just has only moderately more bugs than the orthogonal instead on a lot more.

[–] 13igTyme@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

Don't forget, "Had recent thing happened that made waves in Internet circles and now people are buying the game to leave a negative review with less than an hour only because they are jumping on the review bomb band wagon and have FOMO for an 'event'."

Or a recent update added a non-game feature that ruined it, like banning you for using multiplayer with a vpn or adding drm.

[–] Mirodir@discuss.tchncs.de 52 points 2 weeks ago

In addition to what other people already said, without looking at the actual percentages, this could also just be random fluctuation.
Mostly Positive is 70-79%, Mixed is 40-69%. If a game teeters around the 70% mark, it can easily cross the threshold separating the two due to pure chance, in either direction.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 39 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Translation: game probably got worse.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Or the dev/major person associated with the game said/did some fucked up shit.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Or the dev/major person associated with the game pissed off bigots.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 2 points 1 week ago

Or became a milkshake duck themselves.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 3 points 1 week ago

Or they didn't finish / "finished" but not really an early access game, leaving everyone holding the bag.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 30 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

any games that are the opposite? that started with terrible reviews then improved a lot?

besides No man sky?

[–] Randomocity@sh.itjust.works 43 points 2 weeks ago
[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 3 points 1 week ago

I think darktide sid the bad to good to bad again

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I also hate it when changes to the game ruin it. Every time I have seen this happen there were changes to the game for the worse that are easy to confirm by looking at where the decline starts and checking out reviews shortly after.

Adding microtransactions, breaking the game, trying to enforce a 3rd party login requirement 3 months after the game was a massive success...

[–] far_university1990@reddthat.com 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

trying to enforce a 3rd party login requirement 3 months after the game was a massive success...

At least got cool cape from executive lobotomy. Fuck sony, FOR DEMOCRACY.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

The cape is badass!

[–] LostXOR@fedia.io 16 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

How do we do that for the timeline itself, though? Can't say it's much different IRL. 😅

[–] Tempus_Fugit@midwest.social 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Oh shit, this is for Oblivion Remastered 😂

Edit: Before I read the new reviews let me guess... This is because Virtuoso is laying off 300 employees?

Edit 2: I didn't spot a trend, just the typical complaints e.g., entitlement, bugs, greed, boring, people with potatoes.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

people with potatoes.

Why you gotta do my boy Sam like that? 🥹

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Indecision, frankly

When you're 30 mins into cooking a brace of coneys, if you don't know whether you're boiling or mashing your potatoes, you're kinda negligent. If your fucking plan is to put the spuds in the fucking stew, I think you need to step away from the pot and really take a long hard look at the clown you've become, because that should have happened half a fucking hour ago.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

This guy stews.

[–] janonymous@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Now you buy it and try it yourself, if you're interested. You can return the game if it's not too your liking after the first hour of play.

[–] VegasVator@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Just buy it and don't play it.

[–] madasi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago

I'm in this comment and I don't like it.

[–] standarduser@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 weeks ago

Bad update or long term issues lasting over various updates. Honestly sounds like oblivion remastered.

[–] notsure@fedia.io 3 points 2 weeks ago

...c'est la vie...

[–] Im_old@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Buy, play for a few days, ask for refund within 14 days if don't like

[–] thatsTheCatch@lemmy.nz 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Only if you play for less than 2 hours though

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

They will sometimes refund it after the 2 hr playtime, but you have to actually escalate the ticket to get a chance at that refund.
