Welcome to the News community!
Rules:
1. Be civil
Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.
2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.
Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.
Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.
I’m hoping the Republicans lose track of the counts, and Hakeem Jeffries becomes Speaker. If a few Reps miss a vote, or too many R’s vote “present”, there’s a chance it could happen.
That would be beautiful but couldn’t they just immediately oust him again? Seems very unlikely.
Well, they wouldn’t be in charge of the order of business, so there’s a chance that Jeffries, in his role as Speaker, could not recognize that motion.
Also, as the other guy pointed out, McCarthy being oustable by a single person was only a part of the dumb deal he agreed to the first time round. But getting a majority of R’s to oust Jeffries won’t be hard.
I doubt he would get a single Republican vote. Not recognizing a vote to oust him doesn’t seem workable for more than a very short period of time.
McCarthy getting it came with a clause that any single R can kick him out.
I think normally it's a certain percentage. And the "moderate" Rs that vote for it would know that they'd be in this same place again.
FWIW, McCarthy is well known in DC circles to not be an intelligent person.
Yes but I think it’s in the house rules currently. I could be mistaken on how that works.
But even if it happened by mistake, allowing a democratic speaker would be unthinkable for any republicans, even moderates of which there are very few.
Shouldn't Matt Gaetz be in prison by now? Did that all just blow over?
We're not doing laws anymore. Just for the poors
Yeah. It blew over. The GOP are untouchable.
The attorney general of Florida dropped the case, probably because his DNA was in 17 year old prostitute also. Birds of a feather fuck kids together.
Gaetz handlers are probably pissed that they were so close to shutdown the government.
Remember: this is the TRUE goal of the GOP. A country in chaos is an easy target for attacks. From outside or within.
"Should've gotten rid of that little shit while we had the chance." McCarthy, probably. It's insane to me there's now some possibility of a Speaker Gaetz.
Especially when he should be in a federal penitentiary for human trafficking of minors.
Even if it did happen, the criteria to remove the Speaker has been lowered to the point that he’d be ousted almost immediately.
I disagree with Paul Ryan on many things, but I salute his foresight that this is where the republican party was headed.
Gaetz always looks like he’s trying to spell a four syllable word in his head.
Good. The extremists can't get the votes for one of their own, and they won't vote for a "moderate" R...
It's not good for those who live in the US. A speaker needs to be elected before they can pass anymore funding.
How is that good exactly?
Well… when Teddy Roosevelt failed to gain the support of the Republican Party, he formed the Progressive party and republican voters were split between him and Taft, leading to Woodrow Wilson gaining the presidency.
That's great for the future. But the government needs to operate prior to that time. If there is no speaker, then there's no vote for keeping the government open past mid November
It will be necessary for the whole refusal to compromise on anything approach to actually crash the system before the Republicans who have gone along with it to avoid being primaries to change. While I would have hoped that something less drastic would trigger the epiphany, it kind of looks like a complete implosion will be necessary for the party to stop giving them ridiculous power like only requiring one of them to oust the speaker.
I’m more pointing out that a split in the majority leaves an opening for the third option. More the house speaker and less the presidency.
