Nice, I want to do something like that. How much did it cost?

[–] ilovecheese@feddit.uk 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Thanks! These work out at about £80 per bed. But they absolutely could have been done much cheaper!

I bought brand new pallet collars, but used ones are probably available with a bit of searching. I'd already used all my home made compost in another higher bed, so had to buy all of what went into these.

You should check your local marketplace's for "free lumber", I did a search last week and saw over 10 posts for piles of 2x4s. Can save you some dollars next time... 😝🤑

Absolutely a top tip! Oh the price of convenience, huh? :)

Very nice. Did you put any weed barrier between the new soil and the grass? Any vermin (gophers or rats) where you live?

Thanks! I put a layer of cardboard down first to kill off the grass, which will all compost down so the roots can access the undisturbed soil below.

No burrowing pest issues here, thankfully, mainly badgers and foxes that I have to keep off with the mesh hoops you can just see on the furthest beds.

Nice thinking. Hopefully thats enough. I've had a couple beds I ended up spending years fighting crabgrass that found its way up and through the seems of the box itself.

I expect there'll be some persistent grass, but it shouldn't be too bad so long as I keep on removing as much as possible when it appears. My other established bed has the grass growing out of the seams issue, so I'm somewhat used to it I suppose, lol.

Yes. I just..

I hate pulling grass. Crabgrass is maybe my least favorite weed to have to manage for. Miss even a tiny scrap and you've not got rid of it.

What are the dimensions of one of the beds? They look nice, I've never seen corner brackets like that.

[–] ilovecheese@feddit.uk 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

They are 1200mm x 1000mm x 200mm. Which is standard UK pallet dimensions, as these are pallet collars, which is why they actually have hinges on the corners so they fold flat for storage. Not much use now, but I like the look they give!

(I had to convert them to murica units) they seem bigger in the picture. Nice. Happy planting!

I wouldn't mind getting in that bed

[–] ilovecheese@feddit.uk 2 points 2 weeks ago

It does look comfy....

Love it! I'm making plans for next season. I'm gonna do 8x12 foot beds with a surrounding bed of local wildflowers to attract pollinators.

[–] b34k@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

8x12 feet? How do you intend to get to the center of the bed?

[–] Atomicbunnies@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You know that's not something I thought about... I'll have to reevaluate and maybe make a walkway. Thanks for bringing that up. Time to re draw my plan.

[–] b34k@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, no problem. Generally 4 feet is about as wide as you want to go if you have access from both sides, 2 feet if only access from one side

[–] ilovecheese@feddit.uk 1 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks! I like to put the flowers at the ends of rows of veg. Gets the pollinators and predators right in there!
