This is why I sincerely do not believe in ‘cancel culture.’ Who’s actually been cancelled? Cuz every time I’ve ever seen a rich/powerful/famous man get credibly accused of assaulting women (we’ve seen the Cassie Ventura video), he walks. Weinstein is the literal only exception I know of.

Michael Jackson didn't go to jail, but it effectively ended his career. Cosby got destroyed. R Kelly eventually ended up in jail.

Also remember the positive and negative of jury trials is that it takes one idiot in the 12.

Interesting.. So if you want to do a sexual abuse successfully it seems like you should try being white. I never expected this.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Technically, Micheal Jackson did try being white.

If you want to commit crime, be a white woman for best results.

It's so weird when y'all say cancel culture is just being punished for crimes you commit. "He raped someone and went to jail for it that's cancel culture." That's a fucking weird statement.

Also I don't know why you think Michael Jackson's career had been ended. He was scheduled to start a new tour the next month after his death.

Don Imus? He actually got fired. After a lot of apologies he got back on the air, though

Get yourself a spoon and put it in some Jell-O pudding!

Even he was released early.

Cancel culture is a bullshit term. You’re painting yourself as a member of an undesirable cadre. People below already provided multiple examples of accusations being well founded, so I won’t repeat them.

Cancel culture is good, actually

The 12 jurors are part of the same population that voted for trump. Are we really still surprised at an average group of people making nonsensical decisions...

I see a future recipient of a knighthood from King Trump in the new years honor list.

The OJ trial had a lot of different circumstances that changed the outcome. You can't even compare

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The trial had a moronic jury. That's definitely comporable.

The only time I've served on a jury, there were two morons. I suspect most jurys have carefully selected morons.

[–] Cosmonauticus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It was also after the aquital of a person who straight up murdered a black teenager (which caused riots) and a cop who was factually racist. Also the DA tried to move the trial to wildly conservative venue so they could guarantee a conviction.

Ppl like to agrue he got off because he was rich but the political/racial climate probably had a lot more to do with it

One step closer to the purge becoming a reality. USA, y'all are cooked. Wtf is even happening over there?

[–] Idontevenknowanymore@mander.xyz 14 points 1 month ago

Bro we don't know. It's like they're no longer boiling the frog, they're just chucking them in a blast furnace .

The lead prosecutor is the same person (James Comey’s daughter, Maurene) that prosecuted Gislaine Maxwell, and prevented the human trafficking ring from being publicly exposed. She’s doing the same thing here.

[–] d00phy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Can someone correct me if I’m wrong here? I recall some reporting saying that the charges being brought against him placed notoriously difficult burdens on the prosecution. I also recall this being brought up when his defense rested after something like 15-minutes. Given that, is this verdict really such a shock? For my part, I think this is a pretty clear instance of “smoke meaning fire,” but the burden of proof can be tough.
